Shut Up and Write! – Structured Writing Time for Docs and Postdocs
Writing is essential to academic success, yet finding uninterrupted time for focused work can be challenging in the busy life of a young researcher. Shut up and write! offers young researchers at KIT a quiet, structured space to make real progress on their writing—whether it’s a paper, grant proposal, or other academic text. Each session comprises 90 minutes. Every other week there will be a short 15-minute input by the instructor on topics such as writing strategies, time management, or overcoming blocks. After this, you have time and space to work on your text in peace and quiet. In our teaching weeks, we also offer individual 35-minute one-on-one coaching sessions booked with the instructor to discuss writing challenges, receive feedback, or seek advice on structure and clarity. The rest of the group writes quietly during this time.
This course is not a comprehensive introduction to academic writing, but rather a space to strengthen personal writing habits, receive tailored guidance, and build momentum through structured practice.
Participants will leave with a clearer sense of their own writing process, new tools for staying productive, and meaningful progress on their current project. No preparation is required—just bring your own writing project and get started.

Have you just started your doctoral research period? And would like to know more about the services offered at KIT for doctoral researchers? Then come and join other German and international KIT PhD students at the welcome event for doctoral researchers. In a presentation, we will give you plenty of information on how to best profit from the doctoral research period (including information on research stays abroad and services offered at KIT). In addition, there will be two brief testimonials by more advanced fellow researchers. They will share their experiences with you concerning doing the PhD at KIT and will be happy to answer your questions. At the end of the English-language event, there will be time for some networking during a get-together involving snacks and drinks.
We would in particular like to welcome those who have recently started their doctorate – however, the event is open to all German and international KIT doctoral researchers.

Presenting oneself and one’s work can be stressful, especially in high-pressure academic environments. In addition, academics often face challenges such as navigating criticism, managing mixed expectations, and combating a lack of confidence or support. Imposter syndrome and self-doubt can further intensify these pressures.
This workshop uses theater techniques and transformational coaching exercises to help participants explore and redefine their professional roles, take ownership of their expertise, and transform stress into motivation.
Participants will learn to:
• Utilize strategies for reframing criticism and managing their inner critic.
• Apply techniques to project confidence and competence in presentations.
• Prepare and present an elevator pitch (or short self-introduction)
• Build awareness of the roles they play and craft the roles they aspire to.
• Use tools to transform stress and pressure into energy and motivation.
Approach:
This two-day workshop employs a combination of meaningful practice, individual and group activities, theater-based methods, and transformational coaching exercises to achieve these objectives.

Nachwuchsforschende werden mit verschiedenen Herausforderungen konfrontiert, die zu Konflikten führen können, zum Beispiel im Betreuungsverhältnis, innerhalb der Arbeitsgruppe, im Hinblick auf Finanzierungsfragen oder hinsichtlich des selbststrukturierten Arbeitens. Die herausfordernde Phase kann auch persönliche Probleme mit sich bringen. Sollten Sie sich in einer solchen oder ähnlichen Situation befinden, können Sie bei verschiedenen Anlaufstellen am KIT Unterstützung finden. This challenging phase can also lead to personal problems. Should you find yourself in such or similar situations, you can find support at various advisory offices at KIT. KHYS offers open consultation hours in principle every Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. There you can safely discuss your situation. During this initial consultation, we offer information and advice on how to deal with challenging situations and conflicts. If applicable, we will refer you to other advisory offices. You are also welcome to make an appointment (also for an MS Teams meeting). Jutta Klein-Hitpaß will be happy to answer any questions you may have or to offer you an appointment.

German Courses at STK for Doctoral Researchers and Postdocs

Are you interested in learning German? And have you already checked out the upcoming courses offered by Studienkolleg Karlsruhe? Karlsruhe House of Young Scientists (KHYS) offers doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT the opportunity to take part in the German courses at Studienkolleg. For those doctoral researchers, who are not enrolled, we even offer a refund for participation fees for doctoral researchers and postdocs for German classes in the winter semester 2025/26. Please find all information about who is eligible for the refund and how to apply on our website.

If you are enrolled as a doctoral researcher, simply select the course you want to take here on our event calenader. If you are not enrolled as a doctoral researcher, plesae select your course and apply for the refund (both options will be indicated in our event calendar)
Please make sure that you have taken the online placement test recommended for the course (if necessary). Then not only chose your course level but this time also pick the exact course you want to take before registering for a course and applying for the refund. Deadline for the application and/or applying for the refund program at KHYS is September 19, 2025.
For successful applicants the process will be as follows (our process has changed!)
KHYS will inform all applicants of the outcome of their application until October 2, 2025. If your application for a place and/or the refund is successful, this means you have been accepted for your chosen course. Please do not register at Studienkolleg additionally!

Die Veranstaltung findet auf Deutsch und an zwei Tagen statt, am 23. und 24. September 2025.
Für Forschende wird es immer wichtiger, ihre Themen überzeugend und verständlich kommunizieren zu können und diese gut zu präsentieren. Häufig stehen ihnen dabei nur wenige Minuten zur Verfügung, wie beispielsweise beim Postervortrag auf einem Fachkongress oder einem Tag der offenen Tür. Dabei gilt es, das eigene Forschungsthema möglichst prägnant und verständlich zu vermitteln. Dabei reicht die Spannweite vom fachlichen Vortrag im Kolleg:innenkreis bis zur pointierten Formulierung für Entscheidungsträger:innen.
Die Teilnehmenden trainieren, wie sie ihre Präsentationen auf die jeweilige Zielgruppe hin optimieren. Sie verbessern ihr eigenes Auftreten und lernen, ihre Inhalte so aufzubereiten und darzustellen, dass ihr Publikum sie versteht. Unter Anleitung des Dozierenden erfahren sie in praktischen Übungen, wie ein wirkungsvoller Vortrag aussehen kann. Individuelles Feedback durch Videoanalysen machen die Teilnehmenden fit für kommende Präsentationen.
Thematische Schwerpunkte des Seminars sind:
Kernbotschaft – Aussagen auf den Punkt bringen Zielgruppen – das Publikum kennen und erreichen Präsentationsform, Stil und Ziel – der Rahmen der Präsentation Erzählweisen und Storytelling – Wissenschaft spannend erzählen Aufmerksamkeit – steigern und halten Auftreten, Mimik und Gestik – die Wirkung auf der Bühne

If you do not design your communication with these barriers in mind, your ideas are unlikely to reach your intended audience.
To enable scientists sharing their knowledge with their diverse audiences, this workshop will introduce some versatile strategies for comprehensible communication. Learn, for example, how your topics can be portrayed so that they capture the attention of experts and non-experts alike and how you can effortlessly convey the meaning of discipline-specific concepts. As a result, your papers, posters and presentations will be readily understood.
We will also explore how recently introduced AI-powered chatbots such as ChatGTP can support you in designing comprehensible communication.

The last big milestone in a PhD is the oral defense of the dissertation, which brings particular challenges in communication. This workshop is aimed at doctoral candidates, who want to engage in intensive preparation for their disputation.
Based on the individual experiences of the participants, presentation techniques and defense strategies are developed in the workshop. This includes appropriately interpreting scientific study results during the course of the disputation as well as adequately reacting to possibly critical questions in response.

In the demanding and competitive world of academia, feelings of self-doubt, insecurity, and the persistent fear of being “found out” are surprisingly common—even among high-performing scholars. This phenomenon, known as Impostor Syndrome, often strikes doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers particularly hard. Despite external validation, many continue to question their intelligence, competence, or legitimacy. Left unaddressed, this internal struggle can lead to chronic stress, isolation, reduced performance, and even burnout.
This interactive workshop is designed specifically for doctoral researchers and postdocs who seek to better understand and overcome Impostor Syndrome. Through a combination of psychoeducation, peer exchange, self-reflection, and practical strategies, participants will learn how to identify unhelpful thinking patterns, reframe internal narratives, and foster resilience and self-compassion in their academic journey.

RDM is essential for disseminating research results and thus provides an important step for a career in science and research. This training event will provide you with basic RDM skills and help you make informed decisions about managing your research data, regardless of your discipline or academic field. You will receive in-depth training on best practices for documenting, organizing, sharing and archiving your research data following the FAIR data principles.
Practical applications of RDM are the foci, showing you best practices on how to create or improve data management plans for research projects and how to use an electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) for documentation purposes. Furthermore, as part of the workshop, you learn about the cross-disciplinary RDM services at KIT. Along the research data life cycle, tools such as Research Data Management Organiser (RDMO), Registry of Research Data Repositories (re3data) and the generic research data repository RADAR4KIT and some short exercises round of the training. After completing this workshop, you will be better able to manage your data throughout the research data lifecycle, from project planning to completion.

Ganz gleich, in welcher Branche Sie sich nach Ihrer Promotion etablieren: Ohne Projektmanagement geht es in der Regel nicht. Ob als Freiberufler oder als leitende Mitarbeiterin in großen Konzernen: wesentliche Teile der Arbeit werden oftmals als Projekt geplant und durchgeführt.
Mit besonderem Augenmerk auf die Bedürfnisse der Industrie führt der Workshop daher in die grundlegenden Werkzeuge und Techniken des Projektmanagements ein. Dabei wird immer wieder der Bezug zu verschiedenen Ansätzen und Standards hergestellt und auf Besonderheiten hingewiesen. Verschiedene Zertifizierungen haben daher ebenso ihren Platz im Workshop wie auch ein kurzer Blick auf agiles Projektmanagement. Viele Aspekte wissenschaftlicher Tätigkeiten berühren urheberrechtliche Fragen – ohne dass sich Nachwuchsforschende oftmals darüber bewusst sind.
Die Informationsveranstaltung führt Sie an die wichtigsten rechtlichen Regelungen heran und bietet einen Überblick über die folgenden vier Themenbereiche, die für Nachwuchsforschende von besonderer Bedeutung sind:
Urheberrecht in Grundzügen für Forschung und Lehre Zitatrecht und Bildrechte Autoren- und Verlagsrechte Creative-Commons-Lizenzen und Open Content
Wie kann ich Ideen oder Gedankengänge anderer Personen in legitimer Weise für meine eigene Publikation verwenden? Unter welchen Bedingungen kann ich Bildmaterialien benutzen? Welche Auswirkungen hat die KI auf das Urheberrecht? Wie bewahre ich die Rechte an meinen eigenen Publikationen? Wie kann ich fremde Materialien in meiner Lehrveranstaltung einsetzen? Was ist eine Creative-Commons-Lizenz und wie kann ich diese Lizenzen nutzen? Das Seminar behandelt typische Fragen, die sich in der Forschungsarbeit, der Lehre sowie bei Dissertationen und anderen wissenschaftlichen Publikationen stellen.
Sie lernen das Urheberrechtssystem und die wichtigsten Regelungen für Forschung und Lehre in einem Überblick kennen. In einem zweiten Teil werden wir auf die Autoren- und Verlagsrechte eingehen. A career in industry is an attractive option for many young scientists after completing their doctorate or postdoc phase. And quite a few actually choose to leave academia with the aspiration of entering responsible positions in the private sector.
However, given that employees in private enterprises often are required to both pursue different goals and work differently compared to employees in research institutions, scientists need to adopt different mindsets and competences for succeeding in a business environment. In addition to specialist professional knowledge, transferrable skills in the areas of management methods, leadership and communication are particularly required.
To give you a head start for a successful career entry in the private sector, this e-learning program provides initial insights into key competences specifically for the business context. A selection of short online courses examines a variety of relevant topics, taking examples from everyday business life as their starting point. Apart from conveying theoretical background information they offer practical advice and provide suggestions for exercises and self-reflexion. This basic course of the National Institute for Science Communication (NaWik) gives participants an overview of communicating with target groups outside of academia and teaches first practical basics.
