Vielen Dank!

Bldg. 30.95, seminar room A+B (1st floor)
Patrizia Köhler, Human Resources Development and Vocational Training (PEBA)
As part of a personal roadmap, you have the opportunity to consciously reflect on your current professional and private situation. You will look at your personal goals and wishes and derive concrete steps for your further career and skills development.
What have I already achieved? What skills particularly characterize me? What are my strengths? What is important to me? How do I visualize a successful future?
The first aim of the event is to take a closer look at the current status quo and generate an understanding of your present situation. Taking stock in this way will help you to take a focused approach to your life and career planning, create a basis for reflection for your longer-term professional and private decisions and work on your individual areas of development in a targeted manner.
In this way, you can develop goals for your further career planning from a holistic perspective and derive the first specific steps.
Please note that a career assessment cannot provide individual career counselling. KHYS offers the following workshops for further career planning:
After the Doctorate. Career Planning for Doctoral Researchers How to Shape Your Future. Career Planning for Postdocs
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members.
We generally expect participants to attend throughout the entire duration of the event.
If you are unable to attend an event, please inform us promptly via e-mail. This way you are allowing your colleagues the opportunity to participate and you help us to maintain the quality of our Further Education Program. Thank you!

e-learning
A career in industry is an attractive option for many young scientists after completing their doctorate or postdoc phase. And quite a few actually choose to leave academia with the aspiration of entering responsible positions in the private sector.
However, given that employees in private enterprises often are required to both pursue different goals and work differently compared to employees in research institutions, scientists need to adopt different mindsets and competences for succeeding in a business environment. In addition to specialist professional knowledge, transferrable skills in the areas of management methods, leadership and communication are particularly required.
To give you a head start for a successful career entry in the private sector, this e-learning program provides initial insights into key competences specifically for the business context. A selection of short online courses examines a variety of relevant topics, taking examples from everyday business life as their starting point. Apart from conveying theoretical background information they offer practical advice and provide suggestions for exercises and self-reflexion. Competences acquired by working thouroughly on these e-learnings can also be helpful for similar tasks in other than industrial work contexts, of course.
We have three modules in our Short-Cuts to Industry Program: Management Methods - Leadership - Communication. Depending on your personal needs, you can choose one course per module (they are offered in English, German or other languages) and compile them into your personal self-learning programme. Get fit for a career in industry! Below you can register for the Leadership module.
Leadership
New to the Leadership Role (50 min)
Female Leadership (80 min)
Making Good Decisions (70 min)
Giving Feedback (70 min)
Lateral Leadership (50 min)
Successfully Structuring Team Development (60 min)
Information on registration and course operation
You will be able to choose one course per module. Please choose carefully on the basis of the course descriptions, taking into account that some courses overlap in their content.
This e-learning course is being offered in a self-learning format. You therefore have the option to begin at any time convenient to you and work through it at your own pace. Please note that the indicated course durations refer to the pure processing time of the course contents. Please plan additional time for transfer tasks.
Please note
You will receive the login details as well as further information on the course in a separate e-mail within three weeks after registration for the course. Please register below for the Leadership module. The e-learning will be accessed on an external online training platform.
You can find the Management Methods module here: https://www.khys.kit.edu/veranstaltungskalender.php/event/55576 You can find the Communication module here: https://www.khys.kit.edu/veranstaltungskalender.php/event/55578

Below you can register for the Communication module.
Communication
Moderating Meetings (50 min)
Targeted Networking (100 min)
Basics of Negotiations (70 min)
Storytelling within the Company (80 min)
Arguing and Persuading Using the Five-Sentence Method (100 min)
Virtual Teams – Communication (50 min)
Information on registration and course operation
You will be able to choose one course per module. Please choose carefully on the basis of the course descriptions, taking into account that some courses overlap in their content.
This e-learning course is being offered in a self-learning format. You therefore have the option to begin at any time convenient to you and work through it at your own pace. Geb. 30.95, Seminarraum Forum A+B (1. OG)
Clemens Salm, Eventive - Face To Face Communication

Scientific Writing. Improving Your Scientific Writing Skills in English (Two-day) [On-site Workshop]
Workshop
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
Bldg. 08.03, room 312
Bldg. 08.03, room 312
Matthew Shimohara, KIT Sprachenzentrum (SPZ)
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on February 2, 2026, 9 a.m. to 4.45 p.m. and February 6, 2026, 9 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.
This workshop focuses on the language you use when writing scientific papers. Our aim is to improve your writing by talking about conventions in the field, producing your own texts and discussing further questions which arise whilst writing.
We start by briefly discussing the content of each section of a paper (Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion). As a group we will develop guidelines that can be used when writing your own text. Next, we will look at authentic sample texts to talk about conventions of style and possibly grammar. We will pay special attention to language patterns in specific subject areas as these tend to vary.
We will use another set of texts to practice editing. Then, you will be asked to apply your skills and write short texts of your own, e.g. a project summary, a critical review and a results section. You will receive feedback on your writing style and use of language. As questions related to language use, punctuation and grammar arise, we will discuss them.
By the end of the course, you will improve your ability to write about your research and comment on other writers’ research in English. You will sharpen your editing skills and develop a sense for appropriate style in a scientific text.
To decide whether this workshop is suitable for you, please consider the following information:
Language requirements: This EFL course is designed for English speakers of other languages, i.e. non-native speakers of English who have a mid to upper range of the Common European Frame of Reference (CEFR B2 - C1). We recommend that you take our placement test on ILIAS before starting the course. If your language level is B1, the course might seem rather challenging (and go a bit fast). If your language level is C2, keep in mind that we deal with issues of grammar and syntax that might seem simple to you. (Information on how to access the test can be found below.)
Topics not covered in the workshop: This course does not cover certain related aspects of preparing scientific manuscripts, such as the submission, review and publication of a paper. We also do not cover citation styles due to the wide variety of styles and requirements for different fields of science.
Course materials will be distributed on ILIAS.

Persönliche Standortbestimmung zur Karriereorientierung. Was kann ich und wo will ich hin? (eintägig) [Präsenz Workshop]
Workshop
Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT)
Geb. 30.95, Seminarraum Forum A+B (1. OG)
Geb. 30.95, Seminarraum Forum A+B (1. OG)
Was habe ich bereits erreicht? Welche Kompetenzen zeichnen mich besonders aus? Worin liegen meine Stärken? Was ist mir wichtig?
After the Doctorate. Career Planning for Doctoral Researchers How to Shape Your Future. Career Planning for Postdocs
Vielen Dank!

Ethics in the Lab. A Workshop on Scientific Misconduct and How to Avoid it (One-day) [Online Workshop]
Online Seminar
Online
PD Dr. phil. Alexander Bagattini and Team, KIT, ARRTI (KIT Academy for Responsible Research, Teaching, and Innovation)
The event will be held in English, on February 10, 2026.
The workshop "Ethics in the Lab" is relevant for doctoral researchers from all disciplines.
What makes research both successful and ethical? This workshop dives into the challenges early-career researchers face in balancing these goals. In a competitive publish-or-perish environment, dilemmas often arise:
Can I leave out statistical outliers to improve my results? When does “data massaging” become misconduct? How transparent must I be, while still staying competitive? What do I do if I notice misconduct by a colleague or face problematic expectations from my supervisor?
Through realistic case discussions, you’ll gain practical tools to navigate these conflicts and make informed, ethical decisions. Learn how to recognize and prevent scientific misconduct, reflect on your role as a researcher, and understand the ethical expectations placed on scientists in a broader social context.
This workshop will show you how ethical, responsible research is key to truly successful science.
Please plan 3-4 hours for pre-workshop activities.
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members as well as for doctoral reserachers and postdocs from universities of the EPICUR alliance. If you are currently not yet a member of KHYS, you can register here.
The event will be held in English, on February 10, 2026.

Technical requirements: To participate in this event, you need a stable internet connection, a webcam and a microphone. Participants will receive further detailed information regarding the online-platform prior to the event.
We generally expect participants to attend throughout the entire duration of the event.

How to Be More Employable in Industry (Two-day) [On-site Workshop]
Workshop

Bldg. 30.95, seminar room Forum A+B (first floor) …
Bldg. 30.95, seminar room Forum A+B (first floor) …
Dr. David M. Giltner, TurningScience
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on March 2 and 3, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each.
Despite world-class expertise in their field, many PhDs discover their CVs don't even make it past initial screening. The reality is stark: academic credentials alone rarely secure industry positions. Companies seek scientists who understand business priorities, can lead projects and teams, and can demonstrate how their specialized knowledge creates market value—a translation that most PhD programs never teach.
There's a significant advantage here: once you understand the unwritten rules, you can navigate this transition with confidence. In this comprehensive two-day workshop, we teach you how to:
Decode industry job descriptions to identify where your skills truly align, beyond obvious keywords Translate complex research accomplishments into business value that hiring managers immediately grasp Master networking strategies that feel authentic to your personality while building meaningful connections Develop compelling narratives that make your expertise relevant across different industry contexts Prepare for behavioral interviews using frameworks that showcase your adaptability, not just technical prowess Demand higher baseline salaries from a position of confidence rather than uncertainty Build a sustainable career development plan that leverages your scientific background for long-term growth
The course is highly interactive, mostly based on lectures, discussions and interactive exercises.
After attending the event, participants will apply effective strategies to significantly shorten their job search duration. Moreover, they will be able to higher interview-to-offer conversion rates and secure roles that truly value their scientific training rather than entry-level positions. Most importantly, they maintain their identity as scientists while gaining the business fluency needed for industry success.

Working Smarter with AI. How LLMs can help you turning knowledge into action more effectively (Five-day) [Online Workshop]
Workshop
Online
Dr. Stefan Götze, Karlsruhe House of Young Scientists (KHYS)
The event will be held in English and run for five days, on March 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. each.
With the rise of Generative AI chatbots, you can now apply advanced professional skills far more effectively than before. Techniques that once required long practice before they could be applied (e.g. in the realm of communication or creative problem-solving) can now be operationalized far more quickly with guided AI support. This shifts the focus in developing professional skills from lengthy acquisition to immediate application in collaboration with AI.
Building on the idea that through collaboration with AI we can augment our own capabilities, this seminar series shows how AI can be used as a cognitive partner in completing professional tasks. Participants will, on the one hand, learn key concepts from four domains essential for early-career researchers (communication, creativity, decision-making, and learning) and see how AI can be integrated as a collaborative partner to translate them into practice. Taken together, the examples from these domains will then also, on the other hand, suggest a general approach for competence development in the age of Generative AI.
This seminar will run for five weeks, with weekly meetings on Monday, 11:00 – 12:15:
Introduction (02.03.2026): Using AI as a collaborator that augments your skills Communication (09.03.2026): Applying established storytelling frameworks with AI to create compelling messages Creativity (16.03.2026): Enhancing problem-solving through AI-supported analogical reasoning Decision-Making (23.03.2026): Revealing blind spots and structuring decisions more effectively with AI-assisted analytical frameworks. Learning (30.03.2026): Using AI to strengthen understanding and memorization of new concepts.
Please also note:
The course will use general-purpose LLM chatbots as point of reference (e.g. ChatGPT, CoPilot, KI-Toolbox). Some basic familiarity with these systems is expected. Participation in all five sessions is not strictly required but will deliver the greatest learning benefit. (To receive a confirmation of participation, however, you need to attend at least four sessions.)

Geb. 50.41, Raum 145/146 (1. OG)
Geb. 50.41, Raum 145/146 (1. OG)
Lilia Tripodi, Lukas Bischof Hochschulberatung

The event will be held in English and run for two days, on March 17 and 18, 2026.
Scientific research is often difficult to comprehend for individuals both outside the respective discipline and academia in general, particularly if it is communicated solely in technical terms. However, in times in which it becomes ever more important for scientists to exchange information across disciplinary boundaries and with the public, it is vital that they know communication tools that help non-specialist audiences to gain a better understanding of their research. Given that humans generally process and store visual information (e.g. images, sketches) more effectively than text-based information, we focus on techniques that allow you to graphically present your research topics for a lay audience.
This seminar introduces participants to basic design principles and methods. It is interactive: Teaching content alternates with practical phases as well as question and answer sessions. The focus of the seminar lies on communication with audiences outside of academia. You will learn how to present your research topic more vividly and make it more accessible to non-trained audiences by creating an infographic. The seminar aims at teaching basic principles of design, sharing helpful resources and methods and facilitating your venture into visualisation. Data visualisation will not be discussed.
In particular, the following topics are covered:
• Basic design principles for visualisations
• Defining the essential aspects of your research: Finding your own core message
• Achieving more: Planning and sketching infographics
• Poster, presentation, comics: Different aims and visual requirements
At the end of the first day of the workshop, you will be given a little exercise to do at home (60 - 90 minutes) that will be discussed on the second day.
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members. If you are currently not yet a member of KHYS, you can register here.
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on March 17 and 18, 2026.
We generally expect participants to attend throughout the entire duration of the event.
If you are unable to attend an event, please inform us promptly via e-mail. This way you are allowing your colleagues the opportunity to participate and you help us to maintain the quality of our Further Education Program. Thank you!

Bldg. 30.96, seminar room 006 (ground floor)
Bldg. 30.96, seminar room 006 (ground floor)
Dr. Daniel Friedrich, Impulsplus
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on March 19, 2026, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and March 20, 2026, 9 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.
Writing a doctoral thesis is very challenging. But if you take a smart approach early on, you are likely to reach your objectives faster and achieve superior results. This workshop focuses on the critical elements for a successful doctoral journey: Which mindsets, tools, and processes make a real difference on the way to a PhD? We concentrate on three areas: The efficient organization of tasks and notes, the productive communication with supervisors and the research community, and the structured reading and writing of academic papers. In each area, we will reflect on effective mindsets, tools, and workflows. The goal is for each participant to take away at least three specific ideas on how to substantially improve their own approach.
Major topics:
- Project management
- Efficient time management and self-motivation
- Managing the relationship to your supervisor
- Tools and strategies for effective literature research & note-taking
If you need guidance beyond the workshop on personal challenges or conflict situations, you can contact the following advisory offices: https://www.khys.kit.edu/english/advisory-offices.php
Please note: In addition to this workshop, KHYS offers other project management courses with different focal points, which may overlap in terms of content:
- Project Management for Research Projects
- Projektmanagement in der Industrie
- Agile Project Management
- Basics of Project Management

Geb. 30.96, Seminarraum 006 (EG) …
Priv.-Doz. Dr. Jens Rudat
„Facts tell, stories sell“.
In a nutshell: WAS will ich WEM WARUM WIE erzählen?
- WARUM Was ist das Ziel meiner Präsentation: Was motiviert mich, was mein Gegenüber?
Vielen Dank!

Bldg. 30.96, seminar room 006 (ground floor) …
Carola Pachunke, Training – Coaching – Mindfulness
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on April 16 and 17, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each.
As a young researcher, you often take on leadership tasks for the first time – in your current position or in the course of your next career step. Being new to a leadership role can be challenging in itself while experiences might differ in terms of gender and personality.
This workshop will support you as a young leader to build a good understanding of what it means to establish a successful leadership style. Motivation, flexibility and transparency regarding communication and delegation are key factors to meet the demands of your role as a leader. An awareness of your inner attitude, self-reflection and a conscious development of your role with its various conditions help to create value in a positive and sustainable manner.
Which mindset enables you to fulfill the role as a leader convincingly? What are your expectations of your team members and what are their expectations of you as a leader? Where do you find yourself in terms of “command and control” versus “confidence in the ability of your members to organize themselves” and fulfill their tasks? Alongside these general leadership topics, it will be helpful to discuss if there are specific challenges or chances as a female or male leader and how to deal with them.
We will explore the following contents:
• Basics of Leadership
• Mindful Leadership
• Management by objectives
• 4 roles of effective leadership and their principles
• Agile Leadership
• Skillful Delegation
• Identification of your key traits and values as a leader
• Gender-specific aspects of Leadership
There will be short inputs, group discussions, exercises, exploration of challenging leadership situations and reflection of your personal leadership style.
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members. If you are currently not yet a member of KHYS, you can register here.

Storytelling-Principles for Scientists. Giving Your Arguments the Persuasive Edge (One-day) [Online Workshop]
Online Seminar
Online
Dr. Stefan Götze, Karlsruhe House of Young Scientists (KHYS)
The event will be held in English and run for one day, on May 4, 2026.
As a scientist, you are constantly competing for attention—whether you are presenting your research to the public, applying for funding, or positioning yourself for the next career step. In these moments, expertise alone rarely sets you apart. Your competitors are often just as capable, and facts or logic while essential, seldom carry the persuasive weight needed to truly engage an audience.
What makes the difference is how your message feels. Your arguments need a communicative fabric that sparks curiosity and creates emotional resonance. This is where storytelling becomes a powerful professional skill. Elements from fictional and non-fictional story-telling help you frame your ideas in ways that are memorable, relatable, and motivating – while remaining aligned with academic standards.
This workshop introduces core storytelling principles and illustrates how scientists can apply them to various communication situations.
We will also explore how Generative AI chatbots such as ChatGPT can support the transfer and application of storytelling principles to your communication tasks.
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members. If you are currently not yet a member of KHYS, you can register here.

Conference Presentation Training. Engaging the Listener in Your Talk (Two-day) [Online Workshop]
Online Seminar
Online
Julie Stearns, Impulsplus
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on June 22 and 23, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m each.
For young scientists, it is a regular and important task to present their work to others. At the same time, however, to persuasively communicate one’s ideas to colleagues or decision-making bodies is often considered challenging. Yet, being a good speaker is often just question of developing a set of skills and techniques such as the use of voice and body language, an effective presentation structure and the dynamic use of language.
This workshop provides participants the opportunity to improve their conference presentation skills. Throughout the two-day workshop, participants will be guided through interactive exercises to improve verbal and nonverbal communication, improve the ability to listen and react generously, and to integrate focusing techniques, which empower the speaker. Attention will also be given to structural and language aspects to improve clarity and flow of the talk.
Contents in Brief
• Crafting an impactful opening
• Engaging the audience throughout the talk
• Affirming the strengths and individual style of the speaker
• Tips to work with body language and voice
• Structuring tools
• Constructive tactics for dealing with nervousness
Methods
• Trainer input (lecture sessions)
• Partner activities in “break out rooms”
• Language tools and templates for practice
• Interactive discussion sessions

Dr. Carsten Rohr, Soft Skills in Hard Science
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on October 19 and October 20, 2026.
Publications of research results is the currency in modern science. It might not be your favourite occupation, but it is a decisive one, strongly determining your future research and career opportunities. In this course, you will be introduced to the process of writing a scientific paper. In order to deepen and apply this knowledge, you will also actually produce a manuscript based on your research data (and one that might serve as the foundation for a journal submission). Questions about other forms of text like conference papers can also be discussed.
A-Z of scientific writing
Developing a clear main message Priority setting in the writing process Structure and logical flow of the text Create meaningful graphics Do’s and Don’ts of AI Tools in writing Tools and use cases for AI in writing How to develop a daily writing routine Efficient communication with co-authors
Please note: Given that this is a hands-on workshop, you need some (analyzed) data to serve as the foundation for a journal article. Please also bring some scientific texts you wrote (e.g., Bachelor or Master thesis, and any published or upcoming papers) to the workshop.
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members. If you are currently not yet a member of KHYS, you can register here.

The event will be held in English and run for two days, on November 13 and 27, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each.
Young scientists like you often face an onslaught of daily challenges like teaching, research projects or administrative tasks. Given that academics are also often expected to be flexible and constantly available, it is only natural that you feel at times overwhelmed. Moreover, those many last-minute, short-term assignments often take precedence and can keep you distracted from more important, long-term goals and ambitions as well as your personal interests.
To keep your priorities in sight, you thus need a carefully thought-out time and self-management system. In this workshop, you will learn to set priorities and forge realistic plans in order to balance the demands of research and your personal life goals.
Workshop topics include:
Self-organization and self-motivation: increase productivity and efficiency Self-management: Defining personal goals and setting priorities, avoiding procrastination Planning: Establishing and/or optimizing daily and weekly planning; recognizing and using your individual performance curve Focus: Setting parameters for working effectively, maximizing efficiency Energy management, work-life balance, mental health.
In the workshop, theoretical foundations and models are discussed and reflected in individual and group work. After the first day participants receive practical exercises to work on at home in case they are interested in enhancing deeper understanding of the topics and develop new personal strategies.
If you need guidance beyond the workshop on personal challenges or conflict situations, you can contact the following advisory offices: https://www.khys.kit.edu/english/advisory-offices.php

Dr. Jan Schmidt
Themen:

Patrizia Köhler, KIT, Human Resources Development and Vocational Training (PEBA)
The event will be held in English, on December 3, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
As part of a personal roadmap, you take the opportunity to consciously reflect on your current professional and private situation.
