Have you just started your doctoral research period? And would like to know more about the services offered at KIT for doctoral researchers? Then come and join other German and international KIT PhD students at the welcome event for doctoral researchers. In a presentation, we will give you plenty of information on how to best profit from the doctoral research period (including information on research stays abroad and services offered at KIT). In addition, there will be two brief testimonials by more advanced fellow researchers. They will share their experiences with you concerning doing the PhD at KIT and will be happy to answer your questions. At the end of the English-language event, there will be time for some networking during a get-together involving snacks and drinks.
We would in particular like to welcome those who have recently started their doctorate – however, the event is open to all German and international KIT doctoral researchers.

Doctoral researchers need statistical methods in many areas of their daily research work, for example when they plan experiments or analyze existing data sets. This online event features a 60-minute talk, followed by an open discussion. The talk provides a high-level overview of questions that statistics can help address, including causal inference and prediction. It then presents resources (such as textbooks, software and academic journals) for learning about and implementing statistical methods. While the talk does not dive into the details of any particular method, it intends to help doctoral researchers navigate the abundance of available resources, and to provide a starting point for those new to the field.
In the discussion, participants will explore how statistics relates to their own research areas. Possible themes include: What data are central to your field? What questions drive your discipline, and how might statistical approaches help answer them?

In der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit stehen wir als Forschende mit unserer persönlichen Produktivität vor täglichen Herausforderungen durch die Komplexität der Forschungsfelder, die Vielfalt an beruflichen und sonstigen Aufgaben und anspruchsvolle Kommunikationsprozesse in der Wissenschaft.

The event will be held in English and run for two days, on June 22 and 23, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m each.
For young scientists, it is a regular and important task to present their work to others. At the same time, however, to persuasively communicate one’s ideas to colleagues or decision-making bodies is often considered challenging. Yet, being a good speaker is often just question of developing a set of skills and techniques such as the use of voice and body language, an effective presentation structure and the dynamic use of language.
This workshop provides participants the opportunity to improve their conference presentation skills. Throughout the two-day workshop, participants will be guided through interactive exercises to improve verbal and nonverbal communication, improve the ability to listen and react generously, and to integrate focusing techniques, which empower the speaker. Attention will also be given to structural and language aspects to improve clarity and flow of the talk.

For young scientists, it is a regular and important task to present their work to others. At the same time, however, to persuasively communicate one’s ideas to colleagues or decision-making bodies is often considered challenging. Yet, being a good speaker is often just question of developing a set of skills and techniques such as the use of voice and body language, an effective presentation structure and the dynamic use of language.
This workshop provides participants the opportunity to improve their conference presentation skills. Throughout the two-day workshop, participants will be guided through interactive exercises to improve verbal and nonverbal communication, improve the ability to listen and react generously, and to integrate focusing techniques, which empower the speaker. Attention will also be given to structural and language aspects to improve clarity and flow of the talk.

In this workshop you will learn tools and background information that, on the one hand, will help you to efficiently develop your research idea into a research project which matches your target funding program and, on the other hand, to write it up in a grant proposal of high quality. We will also discuss opportunities and limitations of integrating AI into the proposal writing process.

Please plan time for this accordingly. However, a prior project idea is not a pre-requisite for successfully participating.
We will have optional homework, so please plan additional time between the sessions for further developing your building blocks for a grant proposal.

To give you a head start for a successful career entry in the private sector, this e-learning program provides initial insights into key competences specifically for the business context. A selection of short online courses examines a variety of relevant topics, taking examples from everyday business life as their starting point. Apart from conveying theoretical background information they offer practical advice and provide suggestions for exercises and self-reflexion. On many occasions, young scientists communicate about their work, project or institution with the public or the media. This basic course of the National Institute for Science Communication (NaWik) gives participants an overview of communicating with target groups outside of academia and teaches first practical basics. The focus is on topics such as dimensions of science communication, the interaction of communicators and target groups, or dealing with the media.

Statistical Research Methods provides comprehensive, cross-disciplinary support for junior researchers who require a foundation or refresher in statistical methods. With a pre-programme diagnostic tool, signposted material and a modular format, the course supports researchers who want to evaluate and interpret statistics. It addresses the current statistics context, taking the interdisciplinary research environment into consideration.

Shut Up and Write! – Structured Writing Time for Docs and Postdocs
Writing is essential to academic success, yet finding uninterrupted time for focused work can be challenging in the busy life of a young researcher. Shut up and write! offers young researchers at KIT a quiet, structured space to make real progress on their writing—whether it’s a paper, grant proposal, or other academic text. Each session comprises 90 minutes. Every other week there will be a short 15-minute input by the instructor on topics such as writing strategies, time management, or overcoming blocks. After this, you have time and space to work on your text in peace and quiet. In our teaching weeks, we also offer individual 35-minute one-on-one coaching sessions booked with the instructor to discuss writing challenges, receive feedback, or seek advice on structure and clarity. The rest of the group writes quietly during this time.
This course is not a comprehensive introduction to academic writing, but rather a space to strengthen personal writing habits, receive tailored guidance, and build momentum through structured practice.
Participants will leave with a clearer sense of their own writing process, new tools for staying productive, and meaningful progress on their current project. No preparation is required—just bring your own writing project and get started.

Der letzte große Meilenstein der Promotion ist die mündliche Verteidigung der Arbeit, die besondere kommunikative Herausforderungen mit sich bringt. Dieses Seminar richtet sich an Promovierende, die sich intensiv auf ihre Disputation vorbereiten wollen.
Der thematische Schwerpunkt des Workshops widmet sich der Fragerunde innerhalb der Prüfung: Wie gehe ich mit schwierigen Fragen um? Wie reagiere ich auf kritische bis provozierende Fragen? Wie kann ich damit umgehen, wenn ich die Antwort auf eine Frage nicht weiß? Was mache ich bei einem „Black-Out“?
Zu Beginn des Seminars verschaffen wir uns einen Überblick über Ablauf und Bedeutung einer Disputation. Wir sammeln Fragen, die typischerweise in Disputationen auftreten.
Im Anschluss werden fünf Strategien für eine überzeugende argumentative sowie rhetorische Positionierung während der Disputation vermittelt. Diese werden in Einzel- und Gruppenarbeit trainiert sowie im wichtigsten Bestandteil des Workshops – den Disputations-Simulationen – von den Promovierenden aktiv umgesetzt. Bei Bedarf kann zudem der Umgang mit Lampenfieber thematisiert werden.

Sie haben einen Überblick über Ablauf, Bedeutung und Funktion einer Disputation. Sie kennen typische Fragen der Prüfungskommission. Der letzte große Meilenstein der Promotion ist die mündliche Verteidigung der Arbeit, die besondere kommunikative Herausforderungen mit sich bringt. Dieses Seminar richtet sich an Promovierende, die sich intensiv auf ihre Disputation vorbereiten wollen.
Der thematische Schwerpunkt des Workshops widmet sich der Fragerunde innerhalb der Prüfung: Wie gehe ich mit schwierigen Fragen um? Wie reagiere ich auf kritische bis provozierende Fragen? Wie kann ich damit umgehen, wenn ich die Antwort auf eine Frage nicht weiß? Was mache ich bei einem „Black-Out“?
Zu Beginn des Seminars verschaffen wir uns einen Überblick über Ablauf und Bedeutung einer Disputation. Wir sammeln Fragen, die typischerweise in Disputationen auftreten.
Im Anschluss werden fünf Strategien für eine überzeugende argumentative sowie rhetorische Positionierung während der Disputation vermittelt. Diese werden in Einzel- und Gruppenarbeit trainiert sowie im wichtigsten Bestandteil des Workshops – den Disputations-Simulationen – von den Promovierenden aktiv umgesetzt. Bei Bedarf kann zudem der Umgang mit Lampenfieber thematisiert werden.

Sie haben einen Überblick über Ablauf, Bedeutung und Funktion einer Disputation. Sie kennen typische Fragen der Prüfungskommission. Sie können auf kritische bis provozierende Fragen souverän reagieren. Sie haben Vorbereitungswerkzeuge für erwartbare Fragen zu Ihrem Thema. In addition, there will be two brief testimonials by more advanced fellow researchers. They will share their experiences with you concerning doing the PhD at KIT and will be happy to answer your questions. At the end of the English-language event, there will be time for some networking during a get-together involving snacks and drinks.

It might not be your favourite occupation, but it is a decisive one, strongly determining your future research and career opportunities. In this course, you will be introduced to the process of writing a scientific paper. In order to deepen and apply this knowledge, you will also actually produce a manuscript based on your research data (and one that might serve as the foundation for a journal submission). Questions about other forms of text like conference papers can also be discussed.

Introduction: Research, ethical principles and professional ethos of a researcher Basic (inter-)national recommendations and regulations for safeguarding good research practice Research misconduct: Examples, elements of offense, reasons and consequences
B) General Responsibilities

Have you just started your doctoral research period? And would like to know more about the services offered at KIT for doctoral researchers? Then come and join other German and international KIT PhD students at the welcome event for doctoral researchers. In a presentation, we will give you plenty of information on how to best profit from the doctoral research period (including information on research stays abroad and services offered at KIT). In addition, there will be two brief testimonials by more advanced fellow researchers. They will share their experiences with you concerning doing the PhD at KIT and will be happy to answer your questions. At the end of the English-language event, there will be time for some networking during a get-together involving snacks and drinks.

Given that academics are also often expected to be flexible and constantly available, it is only natural that you feel at times overwhelmed. Moreover, those many last-minute, short-term assignments often take precedence and can keep you distracted from more important, long-term goals and ambitions as well as your personal interests.
To keep your priorities in sight, you thus need a carefully thought-out time and self-management system. In this workshop, you will learn to set priorities and forge realistic plans in order to balance the demands of research and your personal life goals.
Workshop topics include:
Self-organization and self-motivation: increase productivity and efficiency Self-management: Defining personal goals and setting priorities, avoiding procrastination Planning: Establishing and/or optimizing daily and weekly planning; recognizing and using your individual performance curve Focus: Setting parameters for working effectively, maximizing efficiency Energy management, work-life balance, mental health.

Writing a doctoral thesis is very challenging. But if you take a smart approach early on, you are likely to reach your objectives faster and achieve superior results. This workshop focuses on the critical elements for a successful doctoral journey: Which mindsets, tools, and processes make a real difference on the way to a PhD? We concentrate on three areas: The efficient organization of tasks and notes, the productive communication with supervisors and the research community, and the structured reading and writing of academic papers. In each area, we will reflect on effective mindsets, tools, and workflows. The goal is for each participant to take away at least three specific ideas on how to substantially improve their own approach.

Ganz gleich, in welcher Branche Sie sich nach Ihrer Promotion etablieren: Ohne Projektmanagement geht es in der Regel nicht. Ob als Freiberufler oder als leitende Mitarbeiterin in großen Konzernen: wesentliche Teile der Arbeit werden oftmals als Projekt geplant und durchgeführt.
Mit besonderem Augenmerk auf die Bedürfnisse der Industrie führt der Workshop daher in die grundlegenden Werkzeuge und Techniken des Projektmanagements ein. Dabei wird immer wieder der Bezug zu verschiedenen Ansätzen und Standards hergestellt und auf Besonderheiten hingewiesen. Verschiedene Zertifizierungen haben daher ebenso ihren Platz im Workshop wie auch ein kurzer Blick auf agiles Projektmanagement. Auf diese Weise erhalten die Teilnehmenden einen guten Überblick und einen Rahmen, um ihr Vorwissen zu strukturieren.

Dieser Workshop ist eine ideale Ergänzung zu unseren Karriereplanungs-Workshops „After the Doctorate. Career Planning for Doctoral Researchers” und “How to Shape Your Future. Career Planning for Postdocs”. Er kann aber genauso gut unabhängig von diesen besucht werden.
Da für Bewerbungen in Deutschland, insbesondere außerhalb der Wissenschaft, oftmals die deutsche Sprache üblich ist, findet diese Veranstaltung auf Deutsch statt.
Die Veranstaltung richtet sich an Promovierende und Postdocs am KIT (Mitglieder des KHYS). Wenn Sie derzeit noch kein Mitglied bei KHYS sind, können Sie sich hier registrieren.
Die Veranstaltung findet auf Deutsch und an zwei Tagen statt, am 7. und 8. Dezember 2026.
Eine vollständige Anwesenheit an der Veranstaltung wird erwartet.
