Busting Jargon. Tactics for Comprehensible Communication in Science (two-day) [ONLINE WORKSHOP]
Online Seminar
Online
Dr. Stefan Götze, Karlsruhe House of Young Scientists (KHYS)
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on September 29 and October 6, 2025.
As a scientist, you regularly communicate your expertise to various audiences – not only to people from within your scientific community but also to collaborators from different fields, grant bodies, students, the general public. When writing for or speaking to others, however, you must overcome multiple obstacles for your message to be understood, such as peoples’ short attention span, differences in prior knowledge and ignorance about your technical language. If you do not design your communication with these barriers in mind, your ideas are unlikely to reach your intended audience.
To enable scientists sharing their knowledge with their diverse audiences, this workshop will introduce some versatile strategies for comprehensible communication. Learn, for example, how your topics can be portrayed so that they capture the attention of experts and non-experts alike and how you can effortlessly convey the meaning of discipline-specific concepts. As a result, your papers, posters and presentations will be readily understood.
We will also explore how recently introduced AI-powered chatbots such as ChatGTP can support you in designing comprehensible communication.
Technical requirements: To participate in this event, you need a stable internet connection, a webcam and a microphone. Participants will receive further detailed information regarding the online-platform prior to the event.
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on September 29 and October 6, 2025.
We generally expect participants to attend throughout the entire duration of the event.
If you are unable to attend an event, please inform us promptly via e-mail. This way you are allowing your colleagues the opportunity to participate and you help us to maintain the quality of our Further Education Program. Thank you!

Thesis Defence Training (two-day) [ON-SITE WORKSHOP]
Workshop
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
Bldg. 50.41, seminar room 145/146 (1st floor) …
Bldg. 50.41, seminar room 145/146 (1st floor) …
Alexander Roggenkamp
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on September 29 and 30, 2025.
The last big milestone in a PhD is the oral defense of the dissertation, which brings particular challenges in communication. This workshop is aimed at doctoral candidates, who want to engage in intensive preparation for their disputation.
Based on the individual experiences of the participants, presentation techniques and defense strategies are developed in the workshop. This includes appropriately interpreting scientific study results during the course of the disputation as well as adequately reacting to possibly critical questions in response.
Strategies for convincing argumentative as well as rhetorical positioning during the disputation are conveyed. The PhD candidates actively implement these in the most important part of the workshop – the disputation simulations. If required, managing stage fright and nervousness can also be addressed.
This event is open to doctoral researchers who are KHYS members

Getting Started. Die Promotion als Projekt (zweitägig) [ONLINE WORKSHOP]
Online Seminar
Online
Dr. Daniel Friedrich, Impulsplus

From Self-Doubt to Self-Efficacy. Tackling Impostor Syndrome in Academia [ON-SITE WORKSHOP]
Workshop
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
Campus South
Campus South
Dr. Caroline Götz, Konfliktmanagement und Psychosoziale Beratung (KMB), KIT
The event will be held in English.
In the demanding and competitive world of academia, feelings of self-doubt, insecurity, and the persistent fear of being “found out” are surprisingly common—even among high-performing scholars. This phenomenon, known as Impostor Syndrome, often strikes doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers particularly hard. Despite external validation, many continue to question their intelligence, competence, or legitimacy. Left unaddressed, this internal struggle can lead to chronic stress, isolation, reduced performance, and even burnout.
This interactive workshop is designed specifically for doctoral researchers and postdocs who seek to better understand and overcome Impostor Syndrome. Through a combination of psychoeducation, peer exchange, self-reflection, and practical strategies, participants will learn how to identify unhelpful thinking patterns, reframe internal narratives, and foster resilience and self-compassion in their academic journey.
Topics Covered Include:
Understanding the roots and psychological mechanisms behind Impostor Syndrome Identifying personal triggers and cognitive distortions Deconstructing academic myths around perfectionism, productivity, and success Exploring the influence of gender, cultural background, and educational biographies (e.g., first-generation scholars) Shifting from comparison to connection: creating supportive academic communities Strategies for self-compassion, confidence-building, and assertive communication
Methodology:
The workshop blends evidence-based input with experiential learning. It includes:
Group discussions and case examples Guided journaling and cognitive reframing exercises Peer-coaching in small groups Optional role-playing and real-life academic scenarios Reflective activities to develop individualized coping strategies
Participants are encouraged to bring their own questions, challenges, and academic experiences into the process, fostering a space of psychological safety, mutual learning, and community support. No prior psychological knowledge is needed—just openness, curiosity, and a willingness to engage in honest reflection.
Key Competencies Acquired:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be equipped with:
A deeper self-understanding regarding the roots and patterns of their own self-doubt Tools to identify and challenge Impostor thoughts as they arise Techniques for emotion regulation and stress management in academic contexts Enhanced communication strategies for discussing achievements and boundaries confidently A personal action plan to implement resilience-building habits in their daily academic lives
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members.
The event will be held in English.
We generally expect participants to attend throughout the entire duration of the event.
If you are unable to attend an event, please inform us promptly via e-mail. This way you are allowing your colleagues the opportunity to participate and you help us to maintain the quality of our Further Education Program. Thank you!
