Bldg. 30.95, seminar room Forum A+B (first floor)
Dr. Carsten Rohr, Soft Skills in Hard Science
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on October 19 and October 20, 2026.
Publications of research results is the currency in modern science. It might not be your favourite occupation, but it is a decisive one, strongly determining your future research and career opportunities. In this course, you will be introduced to the process of writing a scientific paper. In order to deepen and apply this knowledge, you will also actually produce a manuscript based on your research data (and one that might serve as the foundation for a journal submission). Questions about other forms of text like conference papers can also be discussed.
A-Z of scientific writing
Developing a clear main message Priority setting in the writing process Structure and logical flow of the text Create meaningful graphics Do’s and Don’ts of AI Tools in writing Tools and use cases for AI in writing How to develop a daily writing routine Efficient communication with co-authors
Please note: Given that this is a hands-on workshop, you need some (analyzed) data to serve as the foundation for a journal article. Please also bring some scientific texts you wrote (e.g., Bachelor or Master thesis, and any published or upcoming papers) to the workshop.
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members. If you are currently not yet a member of KHYS, you can register here.
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on October 19 and October 20, 2026.
We generally expect participants to attend throughout the entire duration of the event.

Writing a doctoral thesis is very challenging. But if you take a smart approach early on, you are likely to reach your objectives faster and achieve superior results. This workshop focuses on the critical elements for a successful doctoral journey: Which mindsets, tools, and processes make a real difference on the way to a PhD? We concentrate on three areas: The efficient organization of tasks and notes, the productive communication with supervisors and the research community, and the structured reading and writing of academic papers. In each area, we will reflect on effective mindsets, tools, and workflows. The goal is for each participant to take away at least three specific ideas on how to substantially improve their own approach.
Major topics:
- Project management
- Efficient time management and self-motivation
- Managing the relationship to your supervisor
- Tools and strategies for effective literature research & note-taking
If you need guidance beyond the workshop on personal challenges or conflict situations, you can contact the following advisory offices: https://www.khys.kit.edu/english/advisory-offices.php

Themen:
Definition: Was ist ein Projekt? Unterschiede des Projektmanagements in Wissenschaft und Industrie Initiierung und von Projekten und Klärung der Voraussetzungen Projektplanung: Phasen, Meilensteine, Projektstrukturplan und Gantt-Charts Kalkulation und Controlling Ermittlung von Risiken und Zielen Standards und Zertifizierungen im Projektmanagement Aktuelle Trends und Themen

Patrizia Köhler, KIT, Human Resources Development and Vocational Training (PEBA)
The event will be held in English, on December 3, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
As part of a personal roadmap, you take the opportunity to consciously reflect on your current professional and private situation. You will look at your personal goals and wishes and derive concrete steps for your further career and skills development.
What have I already achieved? What skills particularly characterize me? What are my strengths? What is important to me? How do I visualize a successful future?
The first aim of the event is to take a closer look at the current status quo and generate an understanding of your present situation. Taking stock in this way will help you to take a focused approach to your life and career planning, create a basis for reflection for your longer-term professional and private decisions and work on your individual areas of development in a targeted manner.
In this way, you can develop goals for your further career planning from a holistic perspective and derive the first specific steps.
Please note that a career assessment cannot provide individual career counselling. KHYS offers the following workshops for further career planning:
