The course advises young scientists on how to publish the hard-won results of their research and to plan an appropriate publication strategy for their early academic career. The course will begin by exploring why researchers in the sciences should publish their results. It will then guide participants through the processes involved in getting an article or paper published in an academic journal, including:
Reasons for publishing your work and some of the key factors you need to consider when getting started
Navigating the pre-submission stage, from planning your time to preparing supplementary material, information and metadata
The importance of review for quality control and the requirements of the review process
Relevant resources, platforms and social media that can help ensure you publish in an impactful way
Duration of this course: 150 min
The indicated course duration refers to the pure review of the learning content. Please plan additional time for working on exercises and transfer tasks.

This course will help you to explore how you can communicate your work to a range of audiences using digital tools and innovative communication methods. It will also encourage you to reflect on how you can build networks and connect with your professional community. This course helps you to: Communicating the importance of your work to a potential funder or industry partner Identify the networks that are meaningful to you Develop strategies that can help you to build your networks and connect with a professional community Explain how digital communication and social media might provide networking opportunities and how to make the most of in-person event Evaluate how innovative approaches can contribute to your research communication strategy
Throughout the course, in-depth interviews with current doctoral researchers and experienced academics will provide you with tips and advice on various aspects of attending, presenting at and organising seminars, symposia and conferences.

Der Weg zur Doktorarbeit steckt voller Herausforderungen. Doch wer sich von Anfang an eine kluge Herangehensweise überlegt, erreicht schneller seine Ziele und erhält bessere Ergebnisse. Der Workshop konzentriert sich auf die zentralen Stellschrauben für eine erfolgreiche Promotion: Welche Mindsets, Werkzeuge und Arbeitsprozesse machen einen echten Unterschied auf dem Weg zur Promotion? Dabei fokussieren wir uns auf drei Schlüsselbereiche für eine erfolgreiche Dissertation: Die effiziente Organisation von Aufgaben und Notizen, den produktiven Austausch mit der Forschungsgemeinschaft sowie das strukturierte Lesen und Verfassen von Texten. Für jeden Bereich reflektieren wir effektive Mindsets, Werkzeuge und Arbeitsabläufe. In the demanding and competitive world of academia, feelings of self-doubt, insecurity, and the persistent fear of being “found out” are surprisingly common—even among high-performing scholars. This phenomenon, known as Impostor Syndrome, often strikes doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers particularly hard. Despite external validation, many continue to question their intelligence, competence, or legitimacy. Left unaddressed, this internal struggle can lead to chronic stress, isolation, reduced performance, and even burnout.
This interactive workshop is designed specifically for doctoral researchers and postdocs who seek to better understand and overcome Impostor Syndrome. Through a combination of psychoeducation, peer exchange, self-reflection, and practical strategies, participants will learn how to identify unhelpful thinking patterns, reframe internal narratives, and foster resilience and self-compassion in their academic journey.
Topics Covered Include:
Understanding the roots and psychological mechanisms behind Impostor Syndrome Identifying personal triggers and cognitive distortions Deconstructing academic myths around perfectionism, productivity, and success Exploring the influence of gender, cultural background, and educational biographies (e.g., first-generation scholars) Shifting from comparison to connection: creating supportive academic communities Strategies for self-compassion, confidence-building, and assertive communication
Methodology:
The workshop blends evidence-based input with experiential learning. It includes:
Group discussions and case examples Guided journaling and cognitive reframing exercises Peer-coaching in small groups Optional role-playing and real-life academic scenarios Reflective activities to develop individualized coping strategies
Participants are encouraged to bring their own questions, challenges, and academic experiences into the process, fostering a space of psychological safety, mutual learning, and community support. No prior psychological knowledge is needed—just openness, curiosity, and a willingness to engage in honest reflection.
