The workshop "Ethics in the Lab" is relevant for doctoral researchers from all disciplines.
 
What makes research both successful and ethical? This workshop dives into the challenges early-career researchers face in balancing these goals. In a competitive publish-or-perish environment, dilemmas often arise:
 
Can I leave out statistical outliers to improve my results? When does “data massaging” become misconduct? How transparent must I be, while still staying competitive? What do I do if I notice misconduct by a colleague or face problematic expectations from my supervisor?  
Through realistic case discussions, you’ll gain practical tools to navigate these conflicts and make informed, ethical decisions. Learn how to recognize and prevent scientific misconduct, reflect on your role as a researcher, and understand the ethical expectations placed on scientists in a broader social context.
 
This workshop will show you how ethical, responsible research is key to truly successful science.
 
Please plan 3-4 hours for pre-workshop activities.

Have you just started your doctoral research period? And would like to know more about the services offered at KIT for doctoral researchers? Then come and join other German and international KIT PhD students at the welcome event for doctoral researchers. In a presentation, we will give you plenty of information on how to best profit from the doctoral research period (including information on research stays abroad and services offered at KIT). In addition, there will be two brief testimonials by more advanced fellow researchers. They will share their experiences with you concerning doing the PhD at KIT and will be happy to answer your questions. At the end of the English-language event, there will be time for some networking during a get-together involving snacks and drinks.

We would in particular like to welcome those who have recently started their doctorate – however, the event is open to all German and international KIT doctoral researchers.

The Welcome Event takes place four times a year.

Als Nachwuchsforschende wird von Ihnen in erster Linie erwartet, wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse zu befördern. Dabei ist es eine Sache, die Forschungsergebnisse mit dem nötigen fachlichen Handwerkszeug zu erzielen; eine ganz andere Sache ist es jedoch, die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse und die eigene Forscherpersönlichkeit auch überzeugend und souverän nach außen hin zu vertreten. Genau darauf kommt es jedoch in vielen Situationen auch an. Sowohl innerhalb der Wissenschaft, wie auch für zukünftige Positionen außerhalb der Wissenschaft kann dieser zweite Aspekt ein Erfolgsfaktor für die Karriere sein.
 
Gleichzeitig ist diese Aufgabe in der Phase der wissenschaftlichen Qualifizierung oftmals neu und stellt daher für viele eine besondere Herausforderung dar – gerade, wenn das souveräne Auftreten erfahrenerer Mitstreitender vielleicht noch zusätzlich einschüchternd wirkt.
 
Der Workshop unterstützt Sie dabei, souveränes Kommunizieren und Auftreten einzuüben. Sie lernen, verschiedene Schemata der Kommunikation zu erkennen und damit gelassen umzugehen. Dazu gehören ebenfalls die Fähigkeiten, Grenzen zu setzen, mit Provokationen umzugehen und Selbstsicherheit auszustrahlen. Auf diese Weise soll es Ihnen in Zukunft ein Leichtes sein, entspannt und gelingend zu kommunizieren und die eigene Kompetenz und Persönlichkeit souverän sichtbar werden zu lassen.

Agile project management allows running projects in changing and uncertain environments. Originally developed in the IT sector, agile project management is now widely used across various fields to respond flexibly and effectively to evolving conditions.
 
This one-day workshop introduces participants to the core ideas and principles of agile project management. The workshop offers the opportunity to use specific tools in practice to better understand the agile project management approach by using these applications. Additionally, you’ll explore IT tools such as Jira and Trello. Beyond theoretical input, the workshop emphasizes practical application through hands-on exercises, enabling participants to actively engage and apply what they learn.
 
The workshop will also provide a better understanding of SCRUM as a framework in the agile cosmos and its specifics.
 
After the workshop participants will have the opportunity to further explore the workshop contents through a provided podcast and a topic-specific GPT, allowing for independent learning.
 
After the workshop, you will be able to:
Deal with the most important terms and use tools from agile project management like Kanban. Distinguish when to use agile vs. traditional project management approaches. Utilize IT tools such as Jira and Trello to streamline agile project management. Adapt to changes in project requirements with flexibility and efficiency.  
Target group: Doctoral researchers and postdocs with basic knowledge of traditional project management who want to deepen their understanding of agile project management.

Scientific research is often difficult to comprehend for individuals both outside the respective discipline and academia in general, particularly if it is communicated solely in technical terms. However, in times in which it becomes ever more important for scientists to exchange information across disciplinary boundaries and with the public, it is vital that they know communication tools that help non-specialist audiences to gain a better understanding of their research. Given that humans generally process and store visual information (e.g. images, sketches) more effectively than text-based information, we focus on techniques that allow you to graphically present your research topics for a lay audience.
 
This seminar introduces participants to basic design principles and methods. It is interactive: Teaching content alternates with practical phases as well as question and answer sessions. The focus of the seminar lies on communication with audiences outside of academia. You will learn how to present your research topic more vividly and make it more accessible to non-trained audiences by creating an infographic. The seminar aims at teaching basic principles of design, sharing helpful resources and methods and facilitating your venture into visualisation. Data visualisation will not be discussed.
 
In particular, the following topics are covered: 
• Basic design principles for visualisations
• Defining the essential aspects of your research: Finding your own core message
• Achieving more: Planning and sketching infographics 
• Poster, presentation, comics: Different aims and visual requirements
• Introduction to AI-Tools
 
At the end of the first day of the workshop, you will be given a little exercise to do at home (60 - 90 minutes) that will be discussed on the second day.

Die Veranstaltung findet auf Deutsch und an zwei Tagen statt, am 24. und 25. März 2026, jeweils von 9:00 bis 17:00 Uhr.
 
„Facts tell, stories sell“. Die bloße Auflistung der eigenen Laborergebnisse mag für eine Publikation in Fachzeitschriften genügen. Wer aber einen nachhaltigen Eindruck hinterlassen will – sei es zum Anstoßen von Forschungskooperationen bei Tagungen, zur Einwerbung von Fördermitteln bei öffentlichen Geldgebern und Industriepartnern, aber auch bei der Kurzpräsentation der eigenen wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit im Rahmen eines Vorstellungsgesprächs – umgibt seine fachlichen Leistungen mit einer ansprechenden Verpackung.
 
In diesem Workshop wird vermittelt, wie man aus einer Forschungsfrage eine spannende Geschichte konstruiert, und wie man diese mitreißend erzählt, um ihre Kernbotschaft nachhaltig im Gedächtnis eines spezifischen Auditoriums zu verankern. Mittels Videoreflexion wird die Bedeutung non- und paraverbaler Kommunikation hervorgehoben. In a nutshell: WAS will ich WEM WARUM WIE erzählen?
 
Thematische Schwerpunkte sind:
- WAS Fokussierung aufs Wesentliche und Formulieren einer Kernbotschaft
- WEM Definition der Zielgruppe, Erkennen ihrer spezifischen Bedürfnisse und Vorkenntnisse, Anpassung von Fachvokabular und ggf. Vortragsstil und -tempo
- WARUM Was ist das Ziel meiner Präsentation: Was motiviert mich, was mein Gegenüber? Wie erziele ich Aufmerksamkeit, wie halte ich diese?
- WIE Grundlagen des Storytellings, Rhetorik und sprachliche Stilmittel, Einsatz von Humor, Stimme und Körper bzw.
Mimik und Gestik, Umgang mit Lampenfieber; Vor- und Nachteile verschiedener Präsentationsformate mit Schwerpunkt „Powerpoint“
 
Hinweis: Am ersten Kurstag werden alle anhand des Gelernten eine kurze Präsentation selber erstellen, die am zweiten Tag durch Feedback seitens des Kurses und der Kursleitung sowie mittels Videoreflexion optimiert wird. Da „Powerpoint“ nach wie vor das bevorzugte Präsentationsformat auf Konferenzen ist, wird das Mitbringen eines mobilen Endgerätes mit entsprechender Software erwartet.

Project management is an essential competence for researchers. It supports the successful completion of complex tasks in everyday academic work and is equally relevant for future roles outside academia. Projects succeed when professional expertise is combined with solid management and self-management skills.
 
This workshop introduces the core principles of project management for doctoral researchers and postdocs without prior experience. Participants learn to plan and manage their projects systematically and to understand how structured project work contributes to effective research and long-term career development.
 
After the workshop you will be able to:
Plan and manage projects systematically by defining clear objectives, planning scope, resources, time and analysing stakeholders and risks Understand and implement the project life cycle including roles, activities, milestones, communication, risk management, work breakdown structure and project control Differentiate between classic, agile and hybrid project management approaches Identify typical pitfalls and apply suitable solutions Use relevant online project management tools  
The workshop is practice-oriented, experience-based and interactive. All phases of project management are worked through using examples, and there is space for individual exchange of experiences.
 
You will leave the workshop with a practical toolkit for professional project management in science and beyond.

As a young researcher, you often take on leadership tasks for the first time – in your current position or in the course of your next career step. Being new to a leadership role can be challenging in itself while experiences might differ in terms of gender and personality.
 
This workshop will support you as a young leader to build a good understanding of what it means to establish a successful leadership style. Motivation, flexibility and transparency regarding communication and delegation are key factors to meet the demands of your role as a leader. An awareness of your inner attitude, self-reflection and a conscious development of your role with its various conditions help to create value in a positive and sustainable manner.
 
Which mindset enables you to fulfill the role as a leader convincingly? What are your expectations of your team members and what are their expectations of you as a leader? Where do you find yourself in terms of “command and control” versus “confidence in the ability of your members to organize themselves” and fulfill their tasks? Alongside these general leadership topics, it will be helpful to discuss if there are specific challenges or chances as a female or male leader and how to deal with them.

Research data are the basis and result of scientific work. The basic principles of good research data management (RDM) and good scientific practice therefore include a systematic approach to the collection and, if necessary, subsequent use and evaluation of data, as well as to their storage and accessibility.
 
The course offers a concise introduction to the basics and aspects of research data management with the associated terms, most important models and processes and of course some helpful tools. A Q&A session is planned after the presentation, offering participants time to ask specific questions relating to their own RDM.

What makes the difference is how your message feels. Your arguments need a communicative fabric that sparks curiosity and creates emotional resonance. This is where storytelling becomes a powerful professional skill. Elements from fictional and non-fictional story-telling help you frame your ideas in ways that are memorable, relatable, and motivating – while remaining aligned with academic standards.
 
This workshop introduces core storytelling principles and illustrates how scientists can apply them to various communication situations.
 
We will also explore how Generative AI chatbots such as ChatGPT can support the transfer and application of storytelling principles to your communication tasks.

Stressmanagement ist heutzutage eine wichtige Kompetenz, um gesund und ausgeglichen die vielfältigen beruflichen und privaten Aufgaben und Anforderungen zu bewältigen. The oral defense of the dissertation marks the final milestone of a PhD and poses unique communication challenges. This workshop is designed for doctoral candidates who wish to prepare intensively for their disputation.
 
Drawing on the participants’ individual experiences, the workshop focuses on developing effective presentation techniques and defense strategies. Participants learn how to interpret and present scientific findings clearly and how to respond confidently and appropriately to critical questions.
 
Key strategies for persuasive argumentation and rhetorical positioning during the defense are introduced and actively practiced in disputation simulations, which form the core of the workshop. If desired, the session can also address methods for managing stage fright and nervousness.

For young scientists, it is a regular and important task to present their work to others. At the same time, however, to persuasively communicate one’s ideas to colleagues or decision-making bodies is often considered challenging. Yet, being a good speaker is often just question of developing a set of skills and techniques such as the use of voice and body language, an effective presentation structure and the dynamic use of language.
 
This workshop provides participants the opportunity to improve their conference presentation skills. Throughout the two-day workshop, participants will be guided through interactive exercises to improve verbal and nonverbal communication, improve the ability to listen and react generously, and to integrate focusing techniques, which empower the speaker. Attention will also be given to structural and language aspects to improve clarity and flow of the talk.

Publications of research results is the currency in modern science. It might not be your favourite occupation, but it is a decisive one, strongly determining your future research and career opportunities. In this course, you will be introduced to the process of writing a scientific paper. In order to deepen and apply this knowledge, you will also actually produce a manuscript based on your research data (and one that might serve as the foundation for a journal submission). Questions about other forms of text like conference papers can also be discussed.

Developing successful grant applications is an essential skill for a career in research. In this workshop you will learn tools and background information that, on the one hand, will help you to efficiently develop your research idea into a research project which matches your target funding program and, on the other hand, to write it up in a grant proposal of high quality. We will also discuss opportunities and limitations of integrating AI into the proposal writing process.

The course advises young scientists on how to publish the hard-won results of their research and to plan an appropriate publication strategy for their early academic career. The course will begin by exploring why researchers in the sciences should publish their results. It will then guide participants through the processes involved in getting an article or paper published in an academic journal, including:
Reasons for publishing your work and some of the key factors you need to consider when getting started
Navigating the pre-submission stage, from planning your time to preparing supplementary material, information and metadata
The importance of review for quality control and the requirements of the review process
Relevant resources, platforms and social media that can help ensure you publish in an impactful way

However, given that employees in private enterprises often are required to both pursue different goals and work differently compared to employees in research institutions, scientists need to adopt different mindsets and competences for succeeding in a business environment. In addition to specialist professional knowledge, transferrable skills in the areas of management methods, leadership and communication are particularly required.
 
To give you a head start for a successful career entry in the private sector, this e-learning program provides initial insights into key competences specifically for the business context. A selection of short online courses examines a variety of relevant topics, taking examples from everyday business life as their starting point. Apart from conveying theoretical background information they offer practical advice and provide suggestions for exercises and self-reflexion. Dieser Workshop führt in die Grundlagen des Projektmanagements ein und richtet sich an Promovierende und Postdocs ohne Vorkenntnisse. Sie lernen, Projekte systematisch zu planen und durchzuführen – von SMART-Zielen über Ressourcen- und Risikoanalysen bis hin zu agilen und klassischen Ansätzen. Can I combine my ideas about a fulfilled life with a university career? How can I develop a strategy for embarking on an academic career path or other career choices?
 
This workshop will help to answer these – and other – questions for those who want to plan their career development strategically. It focuses on supporting experienced scientists and researchers. It offers possibilities to reflect upon future university careers or alternative career choices. Based on their individual profiles, participants will develop their own vision for their future personal and professional lives.

Publications of research results is the currency in modern science. It might not be your favourite occupation, but it is a decisive one, strongly determining your future research and career opportunities. In this course, you will be introduced to the process of writing a scientific paper. In order to deepen and apply this knowledge, you will also actually produce a manuscript based on your research data (and one that might serve as the foundation for a journal submission). Questions about other forms of text like conference papers can also be discussed.

Researchers are responsible for ensuring that their own conduct complies with the standards of good research practice. The workshop will introduce basic issues of research integrity by addressing important guidelines of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and specific regulations of KIT for safeguarding good research practice – relevant for every early career researcher@KIT.
 
A) Basics of Responsible Conduct
Introduction: Research, ethical principles and professional ethos of a researcher Basic (inter-)national recommendations and regulations for safeguarding good research practice Research misconduct: Examples, elements of offense, reasons and consequences  
B) General Responsibilities
Quality management: research design, documentation/archiving Publication process, authorship and review of manuscripts GRP-Perspectives on the use of text- and picture-generative AI-applications in research Supervision: Expectations/duties/roles Organizational culture: Collaboration, communication, prevention and dealing with conflict Procedures in case of suspicion and relevant contact points  
C) Important Specific Responsibilities
Important prior to any data collection: Authorization or permission relevant research Possible topics (depending on participants’ disciplinary/research background): ‘Research on animals’, ‘Research on humans’ and/or ‘Surveys, interviews, data privacy and security issues in research’  
Throughout the various sections of the workshop the use of text- and image-generating AI will be discussed as an integral part.
 
Via dialogic inputs, discussion of case examples, single/group work and plenary discussion participants will have the opportunity to discuss and reflect their individual research practice and professional attitudes on being a researcher.

Young scientists like you often face an onslaught of daily challenges like teaching, research projects or administrative tasks. Given that academics are also often expected to be flexible and constantly available, it is only natural that you feel at times overwhelmed. Moreover, those many last-minute, short-term assignments often take precedence and can keep you distracted from more important, long-term goals and ambitions as well as your personal interests.
 
To keep your priorities in sight, you thus need a carefully thought-out time and self-management system. In this workshop, you will learn to set priorities and forge realistic plans in order to balance the demands of research and your personal life goals.
 
Workshop topics include:
Self-organization and self-motivation: increase productivity and efficiency Self-management: Defining personal goals and setting priorities, avoiding procrastination Planning: Establishing and/or optimizing daily and weekly planning; recognizing and using your individual performance curve Focus: Setting parameters for working effectively, maximizing efficiency Energy management, work-life balance, mental health.  
In the workshop, theoretical foundations and models are discussed and reflected in individual and group work. After the first day participants receive practical exercises to work on at home in case they are interested in enhancing deeper understanding of the topics and develop new personal strategies.

Writing a doctoral thesis is very challenging. But if you take a smart approach early on, you are likely to reach your objectives faster and achieve superior results. This workshop focuses on the critical elements for a successful doctoral journey: Which mindsets, tools, and processes make a real difference on the way to a PhD? We concentrate on three areas: The efficient organization of tasks and notes, the productive communication with supervisors and the research community, and the structured reading and writing of academic papers. In each area, we will reflect on effective mindsets, tools, and workflows. The goal is for each participant to take away at least three specific ideas on how to substantially improve their own approach.

Die Veranstaltung findet auf Deutsch und an zwei Tagen statt, am 25. und 26. November 2026.
 
Ganz gleich, in welcher Branche Sie sich nach Ihrer Promotion etablieren: Ohne Projektmanagement geht es in der Regel nicht. Ob als Freiberufler oder als leitende Mitarbeiterin in großen Konzernen: wesentliche Teile der Arbeit werden oftmals als Projekt geplant und durchgeführt. 
 
Mit besonderem Augenmerk auf die Bedürfnisse der Industrie führt der Workshop daher in die grundlegenden Werkzeuge und Techniken des Projektmanagements ein. Dabei wird immer wieder der Bezug zu verschiedenen Ansätzen und Standards hergestellt und auf Besonderheiten hingewiesen. Verschiedene Zertifizierungen haben daher ebenso ihren Platz im Workshop wie auch ein kurzer Blick auf agiles Projektmanagement. Auf diese Weise erhalten die Teilnehmenden einen guten Überblick und einen Rahmen, um ihr Vorwissen zu strukturieren.

As part of a personal roadmap, you take the opportunity to consciously reflect on your current professional and private situation. You will look at your personal goals and wishes and derive concrete steps for your further career and skills development.
 
What have I already achieved? What skills particularly characterize me? What are my strengths? What is important to me? How do I visualize a successful future?
 
The first aim of the event is to take a closer look at the current status quo and generate an understanding of your present situation. Taking stock in this way will help you to take a focused approach to your life and career planning, create a basis for reflection for your longer-term professional and private decisions and work on your individual areas of development in a targeted manner.  
 
In this way, you can develop goals for your further career planning from a holistic perspective and derive the first specific steps.
