KHYS Future Days
Welcome to the KHYS Future Days 2025!
What does the future of academic freedom look like? And which skills will shape tomorrow’s science? In this event on Tuesday, November 18 and Wednesday, November 19, we offer various sessions with useful information, inspiring discussions, and networking opportunities for doctoral researchers and postdocs.
The detailed program and information concerning registration is available at the respective event below. Events take place either online or on-site.
We are looking forward to meet you at the KHYS Future Days 2025!

For many early-career researchers, academic freedom is one of the main reasons to pursue a career in science. However, especially for them, their independence can be constrained by short-term contracts, third-party funding dependencies, and the general pressure to present fast results. In a time of growing societal, political, and economic influence on research, a key question arises: Where does the freedom of science begin – and where does it end? And what does that mean for early career researchers?
In this 90-minute event, we will take a closer look at the topic of academic freedom.
Following a brief introduction, we’ll explore and discuss questions such as:
- What exactly is academic freedom and why is it considered a value worth protecting?
- What are the current threats – whether subtle or overt, political or societal?
- Who benefits from restricting scientific freedom – and are such intentions always malicious?
- What responsibilities do universities and research institutions have?
- What does this mean for you as an early career researcher? How can you navigate these challenges in your own work?
In the subsequent get-together at 6.30 p.m. with beverages and snacks participants will have the chance to get to know each other and talk to our panelists.
This event is aimed at doctoral researchers and postdocs who are eager to reflect on how to navigate in science with integrity, responsibility, and self-awareness.
Format: On-site
Target Group: Doctoral researchers, Postdocs

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not just transforming various aspects of our working environment - it is reshaping the way we do research, often becoming an integral part of research projects. But what does this mean in practice? And what could it mean for the future?
In this online event, we will explore how artificial intelligence is already influencing, and will continue to influence, scientific research methods and everyday academic workflows. In short talks, experts will share their perspectives and experience.
Following the talks, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and we will dive into a moderated discussion with the speakers.
Whether you're already using AI tools in your research or just beginning to explore the topic, this event offers both inspiration and practical insights.
Format: Online
Target group: Doctoral researchers, Postdocs
Max. participants: 80
Seminar Room Forum, Audimax (Bldg. 30.95), Straße am Forum 1, Campus South
What are the pressing issues doctoral researchers face today? Which skills will be essential tomorrow?
In this interactive networking event, doctoral researchers connect, exchange ideas on current challenges and emerging opportunities, and explore future-relevant topics. Together with peers as well as members of the Advisory Board of doctoral researchers and conventions, participants explore how to stay or get future-ready moderated by Advisory Board members and KHYS. The event offers a space for open dialogue, creative exchange, and collaborative idea development.
Postdoc Insights: In the second part of the event, two experienced postdocs will reflect on the skills and competencies they consider essential for the future of science. What should doctoral researchers focus on today to be well-prepared for tomorrow’s challenges? Based on their own experiences, the postdocs will offer practical advice on how to prepare for a dynamic research landscape.
Afterwards, all participants are invited to an informal get-together with coffee and cake to end the event in a pleasant atmosphere. Bonus: Meet Career counseler Jana Schmitt there and get career planning advice.
Host: Advisory Board of doctoral researchers, KHYS
Format: On-site
Target group: Doctoral researchers
