What is the relation between good and successful research, on the one hand, and ethical and responsible research, on the other hand?
 
This workshop focuses on typical conflicts that particularly early career researchers may face in the context of a publish-or-perish culture: Is it okay for me to ignore and leave out statistical “outliers” when presenting my research data in case they impact the overall results more than I would like? Is such data “massaging” already scientific misconduct? How transparent must research practice be, when at the same time one has to succeed in the competitive world of scientific research? How to respond when you notice academic misconduct by a colleague? How should you handle problematic expectations of your supervisor?
 
In this workshop, however, we not only want to explain that these areas of conflict exist, but above all provide tools that can help you make your own decisions. We will do this by discussing realistic cases and using these cases to illustrate how easy it is to overlook important things and thus unintentionally overstep boundaries. In this way, participants can acquire the skills they need to recognise and avoid scientific misconduct. The workshop provides general skills and knowledge of research ethics needed for scientists to address the questions raised above. Participants attain the skills to rationally reflect on their role as a scientist from an ethical standpoint, including the specific expectations that role involves in a broader social context.
 
The workshop will show that successful research goes hand in hand with ethical and responsible research.
 
Please plan 3-4 hours for pre-workshop activities.

Have you just started your doctoral research period? And would like to know more about the services offered at KIT for doctoral researchers? Then come and join other German and international KIT PhD students at the welcome event for doctoral researchers. In a presentation, we will give you plenty of information on how to best profit from the doctoral research period (including information on research stays abroad and services offered at KIT). In addition, there will be two brief testimonials by more advanced fellow researchers. They will share their experiences with you concerning doing the PhD at KIT and will be happy to answer your questions. At the end of the English-language event, there will be time for some networking during a get-together involving snacks and drinks.

We would in particular like to welcome those who have recently started their doctorate – however, the event is open to all German and international KIT doctoral researchers.

The Welcome Event takes place four times a year.

Academic careers are risky business: as a postdoc, you have to make wide-ranging decisions about how to develop your research and your career. This workshop will help you plan your next steps.
 
Through short impulses from the trainer, individual research and reflection, and group discussions, the workshop will deepen your understanding of both the conditions that shape academic careers in Germany and of the opportunities and challenges of international academic careers.
 
Aspects covered include:
Permanent positions in academia: what they are and how to work towards them The postdoc phase in Germany: relevant positions, and their pros and cons Necessary achievements (publications, third-party funding and others): how to assess your situation How to develop your scientific profile and academic independence How to deal with the international dimension of research communities and academic careers How to network strategically What do you want to achieve, and how will you get there? Formulate your objectives and make a plan  
There will also be room for your individual questions.

The course advises young scientists on how to publish the hard-won results of their research and to plan an appropriate publication strategy for their early academic career. The course will begin by exploring why researchers in the sciences should publish their results. It will then guide participants through the processes involved in getting an article or paper published in an academic journal, including:
Reasons for publishing your work and some of the key factors you need to consider when getting started
Navigating the pre-submission stage, from planning your time to preparing supplementary material, information and metadata
The importance of review for quality control and the requirements of the review process
Relevant resources, platforms and social media that can help ensure you publish in an impactful way
 
Duration of this course: 150 min
 
The indicated course duration refers to the pure review of the learning content. Please plan additional time for working on exercises and transfer tasks.

On many occasions, young scientists communicate about their work, project or institution with the public or the media. This basic course of the National Institute for Science Communication (NaWik) gives participants an overview of communicating with target groups outside of academia and teaches first practical basics. The focus is on topics such as dimensions of science communication, the interaction of communicators and target groups, or dealing with the media.

Projektmanagement ist eine Schlüsselkompetenz – sowohl für zukünftige Aufgaben außerhalb der Wissenschaft, als auch für den Arbeitsalltag von Forschenden. Projekte gelingen, wenn fachliches Können mit soliden Management- und Selbstführungskompetenzen kombiniert wird.
 
Dieser Workshop führt in die Grundlagen des Projektmanagements ein und richtet sich an Promovierende und Postdocs ohne Vorkenntnisse. Sie lernen, Projekte systematisch zu planen und durchzuführen – von SMART-Zielen über Ressourcen- und Risikoanalysen bis hin zu agilen und klassischen Ansätzen. Praxisbeispiele, Erfahrungsaustausch und Einblicke in Online-Tools runden den Workshop ab.
 
Nach dem Workshop können Sie:

The KIT Postdoc Meeting is thought as a platform for you to get in touch with other KIT postdocs and their research projects and to inform yourself about relevant topics concerning the postdoc phase.
 
We will start with a short keynote speech on a topic of your choice. Following the keynote lecture, two KIT postdocs each can briefly present themselves and their research project. All participants are cordially invited to conclude the evening with a dinner at a restaurant on self-payment basis.

A career in industry is an attractive option for many young scientists after completing their doctorate or postdoc phase. And quite a few actually choose to leave academia with the aspiration of entering responsible positions in the private sector.
 
However, given that employees in private enterprises often are required to both pursue different goals and work differently compared to employees in research institutions, scientists need to adopt different mindsets and competences for succeeding in a business environment. In addition to specialist professional knowledge, transferrable skills in the areas of management methods, leadership and communication are particularly required.
 
To give you a head start for a successful career entry in the private sector, this e-learning program provides initial insights into key competences specifically for the business context. A selection of short online courses examines a variety of relevant topics, taking examples from everyday business life as their starting point. Apart from conveying theoretical background information they offer practical advice and provide suggestions for exercises and self-reflexion. Competences acquired by working thouroughly on these e-learnings can also be helpful for similar tasks in other than industrial work contexts, of course.
 
We have three modules in our Short-Cuts to Industry Program: Management Methods - Leadership - Communication. Depending on your personal needs, you can choose one course per module (they are offered in English, German or other languages) and compile them into your personal self-learning programme. Description:
Presenting oneself and one’s work can be stressful, especially in high-pressure academic environments. In addition, academics often face challenges such as navigating criticism, managing mixed expectations, and combating a lack of confidence or support. Imposter syndrome and self-doubt can further intensify these pressures.
 
This workshop uses theater techniques and transformational coaching exercises to help participants explore and redefine their professional roles, take ownership of their expertise, and transform stress into motivation.
 
Participants will learn to:
•            Utilize strategies for reframing criticism and managing their inner critic.
•            Apply techniques to project confidence and competence in presentations.
•            Prepare and present an elevator pitch (or short self-introduction)
•            Build awareness of the roles they play and craft the roles they aspire to.
•            Use tools to transform stress and pressure into energy and motivation.
 
 
Approach:
This two-day workshop employs a combination of meaningful practice, individual and group activities, theater-based methods, and transformational coaching exercises to achieve these objectives.

Die Veranstaltung findet auf Deutsch und an zwei Tagen statt, am 23. und 24. September 2025.
 
Für Forschende wird es immer wichtiger, ihre Themen überzeugend und verständlich kommunizieren zu können und diese gut zu präsentieren.  Häufig stehen ihnen dabei nur wenige Minuten zur Verfügung, wie beispielsweise beim Postervortrag auf einem Fachkongress oder einem Tag der offenen Tür. Dabei gilt es, das eigene Forschungsthema möglichst prägnant und verständlich zu vermitteln. Dabei reicht die Spannweite vom fachlichen Vortrag im Kolleg:innenkreis bis zur pointierten Formulierung für Entscheidungsträger:innen.
 
Die Teilnehmenden trainieren, wie sie ihre Präsentationen auf die jeweilige Zielgruppe hin optimieren. As a scientist, you regularly communicate your expertise to various audiences – not only to people from within your scientific community but also to collaborators from different fields, grant bodies, students, the general public. When writing for or speaking to others, however, you must overcome multiple obstacles for your message to be understood, such as peoples’ short attention span, differences in prior knowledge and ignorance about your technical language. If you do not design your communication with these barriers in mind, your ideas are unlikely to reach your intended audience.
 
To enable scientists sharing their knowledge with their diverse audiences, this workshop will introduce some versatile strategies for comprehensible communication. Learn, for example, how your topics can be portrayed so that they capture the attention of experts and non-experts alike and how you can effortlessly convey the meaning of discipline-specific concepts. As a result, your papers, posters and presentations will be readily understood.
 
We will also explore how recently introduced AI-powered chatbots such as ChatGTP can support you in designing comprehensible communication.

Der Weg zur Doktorarbeit steckt voller Herausforderungen. Doch wer sich von Anfang an eine kluge Herangehensweise überlegt, erreicht schneller seine Ziele und erhält bessere Ergebnisse. Der Workshop konzentriert sich auf die zentralen Stellschrauben für eine erfolgreiche Promotion: Welche Mindsets, Werkzeuge und Arbeitsprozesse machen einen echten Unterschied auf dem Weg zur Promotion? Young scientists like you often face an onslaught of daily challenges like teaching, research projects or administrative tasks. Given that academics are also often expected to be flexible and constantly available, it is only natural that you feel at times overwhelmed. Moreover, those many last-minute, short-term assignments often take precedence and can keep you distracted from more important, long-term goals and ambitions as well as your personal interests.
 
In order to keep your priorities in sight, you thus need a carefully thought-out time and self-management system. In this workshop, you will learn to set priorities and forge realistic plans in order to balance the demands of research and your personal life goals.

Self-organization and self-motivation: increase productivity and efficiency Defining personal goals and setting priorities Establishing and/or optimizing daily and weekly planning Recognizing and using your individual performance curve Setting parameters for working effectively, maximizing efficiency Energy management and work-life balance In the workshop, theoretical foundations and models are discussed and reflected in individual and group work. Researchers are responsible for ensuring that their own conduct complies with the standards of good research practice. The workshop will introduce basic issues of research integrity by addressing important guidelines of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and specific regulations of KIT for safeguarding good research practice – relevant for every early career researcher@KIT.

Introduction: Research, ethical principles and professional ethos of a researcher Basic (inter-)national recommendations and regulations for safeguarding good research practice Research misconduct: Examples, elements of offense, reasons and consequences  
B) General Responsibilities
Quality management: research design, documentation/archiving Publication process, authorship and review of manuscripts Supervision: Expectations/duties/roles Organizational culture: Collaboration, communication, prevention and dealing with conflict Procedures in case of suspicion and relevant contact points

Planning research projects and handling and publishing your research results are crucial skills for all researchers and require the competent usage of research data management (RDM). RDM is essential for disseminating research results and thus provides an important step for a career in science and research. Effective data management can help optimize research outputs, increase the impact of your research and support open scientific research.
 
This training event will provide you with basic RDM skills and help you make informed decisions about managing your research data, regardless of your discipline or academic field. You will receive in-depth training on best practices for documenting, organizing, sharing and archiving your research data following the FAIR data principles.
 
Practical applications of RDM are the foci, showing you best practices on how to create or improve data management plans for research projects and how to use an electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) for documentation purposes. Furthermore, as part of the workshop, you learn about the cross-disciplinary RDM services at KIT. Along the research data life cycle, tools such as Research Data Management Organiser (RDMO), Registry of Research Data Repositories (re3data) and the generic research data repository RADAR4KIT and some short exercises round of the training. After completing this workshop, you will be better able to manage your data throughout the research data lifecycle, from project planning to completion.
 
Learning objectives
Upon completing this workshop, you will be able to:
- Identify legal and data protection issues and licenses concerning your research data,
- Apply best practices for documenting, organizing, sharing and archiving your research data,
- Explain the FAIR principles and the importance of metadata for research,

Ganz gleich, in welcher Branche Sie sich nach Ihrer Promotion etablieren: Ohne Projektmanagement geht es in der Regel nicht. Ob als Freiberufler oder als leitende Mitarbeiterin in großen Konzernen: wesentliche Teile der Arbeit werden oftmals als Projekt geplant und durchgeführt. 
 
Mit besonderem Augenmerk auf die Bedürfnisse der Industrie führt der Workshop daher in die grundlegenden Werkzeuge und Techniken des Projektmanagements ein. Dabei wird immer wieder der Bezug zu verschiedenen Ansätzen und Standards hergestellt und auf Besonderheiten hingewiesen. Verschiedene Zertifizierungen haben daher ebenso ihren Platz im Workshop wie auch ein kurzer Blick auf agiles Projektmanagement. Die Informationsveranstaltung führt Sie an die wichtigsten rechtlichen Regelungen heran und bietet einen Überblick über die folgenden vier Themenbereiche, die für Nachwuchsforschende von besonderer Bedeutung sind:
 
Urheberrecht in Grundzügen für Forschung und Lehre Zitatrecht und Bildrechte Autoren- und Verlagsrechte Creative-Commons-Lizenzen und Open Content  
Wie kann ich Ideen oder Gedankengänge anderer Personen in legitimer Weise für meine eigene Publikation verwenden? Unter welchen Bedingungen kann ich Bildmaterialien benutzen? Welche Auswirkungen hat die KI auf das Urheberrecht? Wie bewahre ich die Rechte an meinen eigenen Publikationen? Wie kann ich fremde Materialien in meiner Lehrveranstaltung einsetzen? Was ist eine Creative-Commons-Lizenz und wie kann ich diese Lizenzen nutzen? Das Seminar behandelt typische Fragen, die sich in der Forschungsarbeit, der Lehre sowie bei Dissertationen und anderen wissenschaftlichen Publikationen stellen.
 
Sie lernen das Urheberrechtssystem und die wichtigsten Regelungen für Forschung und Lehre in einem Überblick kennen. In einem zweiten Teil werden wir auf die Autoren- und Verlagsrechte eingehen. Ideation: Discover how ChatGPT can aid in generating ideas for problem-solving Writing: Learn how ChatGPT can ease drafting and editing documents as well as adapting your messages to different audiences. Teaching: Explore how ChatGPT can assist in course development, instructional activities, and supporting learners.  
In addition to these core areas, participants will gain insights into general principles for creating effective prompts (i.e., prompt engineering) that can be applied across various domains. By the end of the workshop, participants will thereby have acquired valuable skills that can significantly enhance their work efficiency and productivity.
 
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members.
 
Technical requirements: To participate in this event, you need a stable internet connection, a webcam and a microphone. Participants will receive further detailed information regarding the online-platform prior to the event.
 
The event will be held in English and run for one day, on November 24, 2025.

The KIT Postdoc Meeting is thought as a platform for you to get in touch with other KIT postdocs and their research projects and to inform yourself about relevant topics concerning the postdoc phase.
 
We will start with a short keynote speech on a topic of your choice. Following the keynote lecture, two KIT postdocs each can briefly present themselves and their research project. All participants are cordially invited to conclude the evening with a dinner at a restaurant on self-payment basis.

Die Veranstaltung zeigt die verschiedenen Services der KIT-Bibliothek rund um das wissenschaftliche Publizieren von Texten, Lehrmaterialien, Dissertationen und Forschungsdaten.
 
Die Anforderungen an die Wissenschaftskommunikation gehen verstärkt in Richtung von Open Access und Open Science. Mittlerweile verlangen auch viele Forschungsförderer, dass von ihnen geförderte Forschungsergebnisse möglichst unmittelbar weltweit zugänglich gemacht werden. Das wissenschaftliche Publikationswesen befindet sich weltweit in einem Transformationsprozess, der es für Forschende nicht immer leicht macht, den Überblick über Services und Förderfonds zu erhalten. Die Veranstaltung geht auf aktuelle Entwicklungen rund um das Thema Open Access ein und stellt die wichtigsten Open-Access-Publikationsservices der KIT-Bibliothek vor (darunter Repository KITopen, KIT-Verlag sowie den KIT-Publikationsfonds).
 
Die Veranstaltung richtet sich an Promovierende und Postdocs am KIT (Mitglieder des KHYS).

Taking stock in this way will help you to take a focused approach to your life and career planning, create a basis for reflection for your longer-term professional and private decisions and work on your individual areas of development in a targeted manner. 
 
In this way, you can develop goals for your further career planning from a holistic perspective and derive the first specific steps.
