Workshop

How to Stand Out from the Crowd Without the Hard Sell – Networking and Other Skills to Help you Plan your Career and Get Noticed in the Job Market (two-day)

Monday, 27 February 2023, 9:00-17:00
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
Bldg. 50.41, seminar room 145/146

The workshop will be held in English and run for two days, on February 27, and 28, 2023.

Approximately 80% of jobs are awarded by a referral. The average time employers spend looking at a CV is 5-7 seconds. An average of 250 CVs are received for each job offered so: Don’t be part of the crowd!

Techniques such as networking (a fancy word for talking to people) allow you to showcase your niche skills in a far more compelling way than with a CV. It also allows you to gain valuable sector information that makes you a more credible candidate and puts you in a better position to negotiate a good salary. This workshop will provide you with alternative methods to the usual and well-known ways of job hunting. Methods that will allow you to:

  • Proactively and authentically self-market your unique skillset without being pushy
  • Become more visible and memorable to employers and companies
  • Reliably determine your unique skillset and a career/job that is right for you and then get that job
  • Gather the information & skills needed for salary negotiations
  • Access the hidden job market of unadvertised positions, become the “preferred candidate” or even have positions created for you
  • Talk convincingly and make a good impression in face-to-face encounters like at conferences and in interviews.
  • Actively manage the progress of your search and give yourself the edge over others

The workshop will be a flexible format to be able to address your needs and include your current situation. This is a workshop about how to stand out. It won’t be “one size fits all”. You will be supported to find the best methods for you to use without the hard sell. The workshop will be very interactive. Expect to be asked lots of questions, expect to be challenged, expect to participate!
