HIDA Project Funding
The Helmholtz Information & Data Science Academy (HIDA) is the central platform for information and data science in the Helmholtz Association and offers a comprehensive continuing training program in this field. Furthermore, HIDA serves as the umbrella organization for seven Helmholtz Information & Data Science Research Schools, including HIDSS4Health, in which KIT participates.
The HIDA Project Funding enables doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, and senior scientists of the Helmholtz Association to become part of an international network in data science. Within this framework, KHYS is responsible for implementing two programs at KIT (details below):
- the Course Funding (event support) and
- the Mobility Program (1-3 months research stays).
In addition, the Helmholtz Software Award is part of the HIDA Project Funding.

Participating Partners (Mobility Program):
Helmholtz Centers (Germany), NORA (Norway), NRC (Canada), NST (South Korea), Complexity Science Hub (Austria)
HIDA Course Funding
The Course Funding facilitates the organization and implementation of training events (e.g. courses, workshops, summer/winter schools, hackathons, colloquia, conferences and lecture series) in (applied) data science through targeted financial support. The goal is to provide Helmholtz Association members with broad and diverse qualification in this field. Events can be held on-site (at KIT), online, in a hybrid format, or on demand. In addition, the HIDA Hub in Berlin can be used as a central event location for all Helmholtz Centers.
Details on the Implementation at KIT
Scope of funding: The funding amount communicated to you individually with the funding commitment from HIDA represents a maximum funding amount. In any case, a maximum of 50% of the proven costs in each of the three categories (lecturers, rents, services) are eligible for reimbursement.
In particular, the following costs are eligible for funding
- Costs for teaching staff and lecturers, including travel and accommodation expenses in accordance with the State Travel Expenses Act, as well as fees
- Rental costs for event rooms and technical equipment
- Costs for services such as catering (in accordance with the KIT Catering Guidelines and the guidelines of the Helmholtz Office), professional event management, printing, advertising measures and materials
Travel costs for participants, among other expenses, are not eligible for funding.
Further requirements: Upon registration, at least 25% of the available places must be openly bookable for participants from other Helmholtz Centers or partner institutions. If these places are not filled within three weeks, they may be allocated to participants from KIT or a partner institution.
HIDA Mobility Program
The Mobility Program enables KIT employees and associates to spend research stays of one to three months for self-designed research projects at another Helmholtz Center or at an international partner institution in Norway, Canada, South Korea or Austria.
KIT hosts may also welcome researchers from an international partner institution or another Helmholtz Center.
All collaborations must be related to (applied) data science. The program aims to promote interdisciplinary collaboration, facilitate the exchange of expertise, and support networking with other research institutions.
Information for KIT Travelers
Currently, applications for research stays can be submitted to the following international partner institutions of HIDA or other Helmholtz Centers:
- Helmholtz Internal Mobility Program (only doctoral and postdoctoral researchers): exchange with 17 other Helmholtz Centers in Germany
- Canada Mobility Program: 12 top research centers of the Canadian National Research Council (NRC)
- Norway Mobility Program: 17 institutions of the Norwegian Artificial Intelligence Research Consortium NORA)
- South Korea Mobility Program: 22 top research institutes of the National Council for Science and Technology (NST) in South Korea
- Austria Mobility Program: the Complexity Science Hub in Vienna
Scope of funding: Travel and accommodation costs of up to EUR 2,000 per month for one to three months.
Application procedure: Applications are possible at any time and will be reviewed by HIDA at the beginning of odd-numbered months (e.g. January, March, May). The application must be supported by the supervisor or superior at KIT as well as the host. As the processing office, KHYS reviews the possibility of covering travel expenses and authorizes the application on behalf of KIT. The selection by HIDA usually takes about three months.
Please notify KHYS, ideally well in advance of submitting the application, so that the application can be authorised as quickly as possible (e-mail: hida∂khys.kit.edu).
Become a Host!
Are you a PI and would like to welcome a doctoral or postdoctoral researcher, or senior scientist working with a strong link to the (applied) data sciences from another Helmholtz Center or one of HIDA's international partner institutions in your group for a one to three months research stay?
Become a Helmholtz host for the HIDA Mobility Program and create your profile!

Information for Guests and Hosts at KIT
Guests at KIT are obliged to register via Mobility Online as visiting scientists. In addition, host institutes conclude a Visiting Scientist Agreement with them which regulates the legal framework for the use of the KIT infrastructure during their research stay.
For short-term stays, guests can book a room at KIT’s International Guest House or at the Gastdozentenhaus (house for guest lecturers). However, bookings have to be made well in advance. Additional accommodation possibilities are listed in the Accommodation Information Sheet published by KIT International Affairs.
Once guests have successfully registered, they also have the option of requesting Welcome Services from the International Scholars & Welcome Office (IScO) at KIT. IScO also provides a checklist for hosting visiting scientis. Please note that only some of the information provided there is relevant for shorter stays.
KIT internal mailing list and HIDA newsletter
As the HIDA liaison office at KIT, KHYS also distributes all relevant information on HIDA. Are you interested in receiving information about the most important innovations in the context of HIDA project funding, calls for hosts and HIDA special calls? Then please register in our ▶ mailing list!
HIDA also offers its own, more detailed newsletter for regular updates.
