German Courses at STK for Doctoral Researchers and Postdocs

Are you interested in learning German? Karlsruhe House of Young Scientists (KHYS) offers doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT the opportunity to take part in the German courses at Studienkolleg. Please read the application process carefully before submitting your application.
Application for a Course Place
Doctoral researchers, doctoral students and postdocs who are KHYS members can apply for a place in a German course at STK through KHYS. Deadline is September 4, 2026.
If your application is successful, we will let you know by October, 7. You will receive a registration link for STK. You can then register, select your preferred course, and upload the required documents (e.g. your placement test).
Application for Refund by KHYS
Please note that eligibility for a refund depends on your status:
If you are enrolled as a doctoral student (i.e. you have paid the administrative fee, you have a student e-mail adress), you do not need our refund as you are entitled to a free course anyway! (You will have to prove this by sending your proof of immatriculation "Immatrikulationsbescheinigung" to STK after your registration) So, your application in this case is simply for course participation.
If you are not enrolled as a doctoral student (i.e. you are employed at KIT and have opted out of being enrolled at the Welcome Desk of the Students Office): You can apply for a course at Studienkolleg and apply for a refund of the course fee at KHYS.
You are a postdoc: You can apply for a course at Studienkolleg and apply for a refund of the course fee at KHYS.
Deadline for the application and/or applying for the refund program at KHYS is September, 4 2026.
Application Process
The process is as follows:
Submit your application to KHYS by September 4, 2026. Check whether you need a KHYS refund.
KHYS reviews all applications.
Applicants are informed of the outcome by October 7, 2026 (course place and refund)
Successful applicants receive a registration link for STK.
Applicants register with STK, select a course, and upload the result of the placement test. Those applicants who are not enrolled need to pay the course fee, those enrolled need to send prrof of immatriculation to STK.
Participants attend the course and complete the final examination.
After the course, KHYS will request the documents required to process the refund
The refund will only be granted to eligible participants who have passed the final examination.

Shut Up and Write! – Structured Writing Time for Docs and Postdocs
Writing is essential to academic success, yet finding uninterrupted time for focused work can be challenging in the busy life of a young researcher. Shut up and write! offers young researchers at KIT a quiet, structured space to make real progress on their writing—whether it’s a paper, grant proposal, or other academic text. Each session comprises 90 minutes. Every other week there will be a short 15-minute input by the instructor on topics such as writing strategies, time management, or overcoming blocks. After this, you have time and space to work on your text in peace and quiet. In our teaching weeks, we also offer individual 35-minute one-on-one coaching sessions booked with the instructor to discuss writing challenges, receive feedback, or seek advice on structure and clarity. The rest of the group writes quietly during this time.
This course is not a comprehensive introduction to academic writing, but rather a space to strengthen personal writing habits, receive tailored guidance, and build momentum through structured practice.
Participants will leave with a clearer sense of their own writing process, new tools for staying productive, and meaningful progress on their current project. No preparation is required—just bring your own writing project and get started.
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members.

Der letzte große Meilenstein der Promotion ist die mündliche Verteidigung der Arbeit, die besondere kommunikative Herausforderungen mit sich bringt. Dieses Seminar richtet sich an Promovierende, die sich intensiv auf ihre Disputation vorbereiten wollen.
Der thematische Schwerpunkt des Workshops widmet sich der Fragerunde innerhalb der Prüfung: Wie gehe ich mit schwierigen Fragen um? Wie reagiere ich auf kritische bis provozierende Fragen? Wie kann ich damit umgehen, wenn ich die Antwort auf eine Frage nicht weiß? Was mache ich bei einem „Black-Out“?
Zu Beginn des Seminars verschaffen wir uns einen Überblick über Ablauf und Bedeutung einer Disputation. Wir sammeln Fragen, die typischerweise in Disputationen auftreten.
Im Anschluss werden fünf Strategien für eine überzeugende argumentative sowie rhetorische Positionierung während der Disputation vermittelt. Diese werden in Einzel- und Gruppenarbeit trainiert sowie im wichtigsten Bestandteil des Workshops – den Disputations-Simulationen – von den Promovierenden aktiv umgesetzt. Bei Bedarf kann zudem der Umgang mit Lampenfieber thematisiert werden.

Then come and join other German and international KIT PhD students at the welcome event for doctoral researchers. In a presentation, we will give you plenty of information on how to best profit from the doctoral research period (including information on research stays abroad and services offered at KIT). In addition, there will be two brief testimonials by more advanced fellow researchers. They will share their experiences with you concerning doing the PhD at KIT and will be happy to answer your questions. At the end of the English-language event, there will be time for some networking during a get-together involving snacks and drinks.
We would in particular like to welcome those who have recently started their doctorate – however, the event is open to all German and international KIT doctoral researchers.
The Welcome Event takes places on Campus North of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen (Connections to Campus North: https://www.kit.edu/downloads/Fahrplan_Zubringer_CN.pdf). Die Veranstaltung findet auf Deutsch und an vier Terminen statt. In der ersten Sitzung werden die drei Folgetermine gemeinsam mit den Teilnehmenden vereinbart. Sie sollen circa einmal im Quartal stattfinden.
Relevanz Die Promotionsphase ist oft eine einsame Phase: Entscheidungen über die eigene Forschung, der Umgang mit Rückschlägen oder die Frage „Bin ich noch auf dem richtigen Weg?“ werden meist allein getroffen. Peer Coaching bietet einen geschützten Rahmen, in dem sich Promovierende – unterstützt und angeleitet durch eine Facilitatorin – auf Augenhöhe unterstützen, austauschen und merken: Viele Fragen und Sorgen werden geteilt, ganz unabhängig vom eigenen Forschungsthema.
Leitmotiv: Verbundenheit
In 3–4 Sitzungen entsteht ein Raum, in dem Promovierende merken: Ich bin nicht allein. Im Austausch mit anderen, die ähnliche Phasen durchlaufen, entstehen neue Ideen, neue Perspektiven auf eigene Fragen und neuer Elan für die eigene Forschung. Der dafür gewählte Ansatz ist Dialog- und prozessorientiert, arbeitet mit kreativen und analogen Methoden und legt viel Wert auf echte Begegnung in der Gruppe.
Angewandte Methoden Die Sitzungen sind moderiert und folgen einer klaren Struktur, unter anderem aus Design Thinking und Liberating Structures, mit Wechseln zwischen Plenum, Kleingruppen und Einzelreflexion.
Nutzen Die Teilnehmenden empfinden wieder mehr Leichtigkeit und Zuversicht und helfen sich gegenseitig über schwierige Zeiten hinweg.
Besonderheiten Keine Videoaufzeichnung. Keine inhaltliche Vorbereitung nötig – Offenheit und Lust auf Austausch reichen.

In Zeiten automatisiert erzeugter Inhalte wird das Eigene zum entscheidenden Unterschied. Wer komplexe Inhalte vermittelt, sollte diese nicht nur zeigen, sondern visuell erzählen. Individuelle Skizzen (Sketchnotes) und eine bewusst eingesetzte Handschrift schaffen Nähe, Verständlichkeit und rhetorische Wirkung – und machen Präsentationen unverwechselbar.
In diesem Seminar lernen Sie, komplexe Inhalte mithilfe von Sketchnotes und Schriftbild strukturiert und rhetorisch präzise zu visualisieren. Sie erfahren, wie die „Sprache der Bilder“ Kommunikation nachhaltig unterstützt, gehirngerecht wirkt und kulturübergreifend verständlich ist. Ziele sind, zum einen Techniken zur professionellen Gestaltung analoger und digitaler Präsentationsmedien (z.B. Flipchart, Whiteboard, ggf. Generative AI can provide valuable support for many activities that surround academic work, such as generating ideas, structuring information or drafting and revising texts. However, the greatest benefits are often achieved when general-purpose large language models (LLMs) are tailored to specific tasks, contexts, and individual working styles. In this workshop, participants will learn how to design and build such customized AI chatbots.
Participants will first gain an understanding of how customized chatbots work and what distinguishes them from general-purpose AI systems. Building on this foundation, they will identify relevant use cases from their own professional environments. Through guided exercises and peer feedback, participants will learn how to design effective prompts for customized chatbots and to structure knowledge sources to support chatbot performance. By the end of the workshop, each participant will have developed and tested an initial prototype of a customized chatbot that can be further refined and applied within their own professional practice.

It might not be your favourite occupation, but it is a decisive one, strongly determining your future research and career opportunities. In this course, you will be introduced to the process of writing a scientific paper. Throughout the various sections of the workshop the use of text- and image-generating AI will be discussed as an integral part.

To keep your priorities in sight, you thus need a carefully thought-out time and self-management system. In this workshop, you will learn to set priorities and forge realistic plans in order to balance the demands of research and your personal life goals.

This workshop focuses on the critical elements for a successful doctoral journey: Which mindsets, tools, and processes make a real difference on the way to a PhD? We concentrate on three areas: The efficient organization of tasks and notes, the productive communication with supervisors and the research community, and the structured reading and writing of academic papers. In each area, we will reflect on effective mindsets, tools, and workflows. The goal is for each participant to take away at least three specific ideas on how to substantially improve their own approach.

Ganz gleich, in welcher Branche Sie sich nach Ihrer Promotion etablieren: Ohne Projektmanagement geht es in der Regel nicht. Ob als Freiberufler oder als leitende Mitarbeiterin in großen Konzernen: wesentliche Teile der Arbeit werden oftmals als Projekt geplant und durchgeführt.
Mit besonderem Augenmerk auf die Bedürfnisse der Industrie führt der Workshop daher in die grundlegenden Werkzeuge und Techniken des Projektmanagements ein. Dabei wird immer wieder der Bezug zu verschiedenen Ansätzen und Standards hergestellt und auf Besonderheiten hingewiesen. Basics of Science Communication [E-LEARNING]

On many occasions, young scientists communicate about their work, project or institution with the public or the media. This basic course of the National Institute for Science Communication (NaWik) gives participants an overview of communicating with target groups outside of academia and teaches first practical basics. The focus is on topics such as dimensions of science communication, the interaction of communicators and target groups, or dealing with the media.

The e-learning course contains videos and animations, texts, audio and screencasts. Participants apply what they have learned in exercises, quizzes, and knowledge tests, and they can also deepen their knowledge through links to internal and external content. The course is provided in English or German, participants can choose the laguage after registration.

Statistical Research Methods provides comprehensive, cross-disciplinary support for junior researchers who require a foundation or refresher in statistical methods. With a pre-programme diagnostic tool, signposted material and a modular format, the course supports researchers who want to evaluate and interpret statistics. It addresses the current statistics context, taking the interdisciplinary research environment into consideration.
The course includes the following modules:
Utilise statistics to enable and enhance your research
Storytelling with data visualisation and exploratory analysis with descriptive statistics
Probability distributions as approximating models of reality
Sampling, estimation and generalisation of results
Evidence-based statistical inference
False positives? False negatives? The need for replicability of results
