Scientific research is often difficult to comprehend for individuals both outside the respective discipline and academia in general, particularly if it is communicated solely in technical terms. However, in times in which it becomes ever more important for scientists to exchange information across disciplinary boundaries and with the public, it is vital that they know communication tools that help non-specialist audiences to gain a better understanding of their research. Given that humans generally process and store visual information (e.g. images, sketches) more effectively than text-based information, we focus on techniques that allow you to graphically present your research topics for a lay audience.
This seminar introduces participants to basic design principles and methods. It is interactive: Teaching content alternates with practical phases as well as question and answer sessions. The focus of the seminar lies on communication with audiences outside of academia. You will learn how to present your research topic more vividly and make it more accessible to non-trained audiences by creating an infographic. The seminar aims at teaching basic principles of design, sharing helpful resources and methods and facilitating your venture into visualisation. Data visualisation will not be discussed.
In particular, the following topics are covered:
• Basic design principles for visualisations
• Defining the essential aspects of your research: Finding your own core message
• Achieving more: Planning and sketching infographics
• Poster, presentation, comics: Different aims and visual requirements
• Introduction to AI-Tools
At the end of the first day of the workshop, you will be given a little exercise to do at home (60 - 90 minutes) that will be discussed on the second day.
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members. If you are currently not yet a member of KHYS, you can register here.

Writing a doctoral thesis is very challenging. But if you take a smart approach early on, you are likely to reach your objectives faster and achieve superior results. This workshop focuses on the critical elements for a successful doctoral journey: Which mindsets, tools, and processes make a real difference on the way to a PhD? We concentrate on three areas: The efficient organization of tasks and notes, the productive communication with supervisors and the research community, and the structured reading and writing of academic papers. In each area, we will reflect on effective mindsets, tools, and workflows. The goal is for each participant to take away at least three specific ideas on how to substantially improve their own approach.

- Tools and strategies for effective literature research & note-taking

Nachwuchsforschende werden mit verschiedenen Herausforderungen konfrontiert, die zu Konflikten führen können, zum Beispiel im Betreuungsverhältnis, innerhalb der Arbeitsgruppe, im Hinblick auf Finanzierungsfragen oder hinsichtlich des selbststrukturierten Arbeitens. Die herausfordernde Phase kann auch persönliche Probleme mit sich bringen. Sollten Sie sich in einer solchen oder ähnlichen Situation befinden, können Sie bei verschiedenen Anlaufstellen am KIT Unterstützung finden. Als Nachwuchsforschende wird von Ihnen in erster Linie erwartet, wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse zu befördern. Dabei ist es eine Sache, die Forschungsergebnisse mit dem nötigen fachlichen Handwerkszeug zu erzielen; eine ganz andere Sache ist es jedoch, die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse und die eigene Forscherpersönlichkeit auch überzeugend und souverän nach außen hin zu vertreten. Genau darauf kommt es jedoch in vielen Situationen auch an. Sowohl innerhalb der Wissenschaft, wie auch für zukünftige Positionen außerhalb der Wissenschaft kann dieser zweite Aspekt ein Erfolgsfaktor für die Karriere sein.
Gleichzeitig ist diese Aufgabe in der Phase der wissenschaftlichen Qualifizierung oftmals neu und stellt daher für viele eine besondere Herausforderung dar – gerade, wenn das souveräne Auftreten erfahrenerer Mitstreitender vielleicht noch zusätzlich einschüchternd wirkt.
Der Workshop unterstützt Sie dabei, souveränes Kommunizieren und Auftreten einzuüben. Sie lernen, verschiedene Schemata der Kommunikation zu erkennen und damit gelassen umzugehen. Dazu gehören ebenfalls die Fähigkeiten, Grenzen zu setzen, mit Provokationen umzugehen und Selbstsicherheit auszustrahlen. Auf diese Weise soll es Ihnen in Zukunft ein Leichtes sein, entspannt und gelingend zu kommunizieren und die eigene Kompetenz und Persönlichkeit souverän sichtbar werden zu lassen.

Are you interested in learning German? Karlsruhe House of Young Scientists (KHYS) offers doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT the opportunity to take part in the German courses at Studienkolleg.
Please read our application process carfeully:
If you are enrolled as a doctoral student (i.e. you have paid the administrative fee, you have a student e-mail adress), simply select the course you want to take here on our event calenader. You do not need our refund as you are entitled to a free course anyway! So, your application in this case is simply for course participation. If you are not enrolled as a doctoral researcher (i.e. you are employed at KIT and have opted out of being enrolled at the Welcome Desk of the Students Office): You can register for a course at Studienkolleg and apply for a refund of the course fee at KHYS. You are a postdoc: You can register for a course at Studienkolleg and apply for a refund of the course fee at KHYS.
Please make sure that you have taken the online placement test recommended for the course (if necessary). Then not only chose your course level but also pick the exact course you want to take before registering for a course and applying for the refund. Deadline for the application and/or applying for the refund program at KHYS is March 20, 2026.
The process will be as follows (our process has changed!)
KHYS will inform all applicants of the outcome of their application until April 2, 2026. We will let you know whether you have been accepted for a course and also whether your application for the refund was succesfull. Please do not register at Studienkolleg additionally!
Important: Unlike in previous semesters, KHYS will only make the refund if you have passed the final exam. After the course has ended, KHYS will ask you to hand in all necessary documents and information in order to process the payment for the refund.

KHYS Prompt Gallery - Call for Applications!

Du nutzt LLMs als ein Arbeitsmittel und hast Prompts entwickelt, die wirklich funktionieren? Dann teile Deine Erfahrungen in der KHYS PROMPT GALLERY!
Im Mai werden wir im KHYS-Gebäude erprobte Nutzungsfälle von Generativer Künstlicher Intelligenz (KI) in Form einer mehrtägigen Postergallerie ausstellen. Damit möchten wir Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen des KIT neue Impulse für die KI-Nutzung geben und zum aktiven Experimentieren mit dieser Technologie im Arbeitsalltag anregen.
Für diese Ausstellung suchen wir Beiträge von Euch: also erprobte use cases von LLMs, dargestellt durch die dazugehörigen Prompts bzw. Instruktionen für aufgabenspezifische Chatbots. Dabei sind Prompts und Chatbots aus all Euren Arbeitssituationen willkommen - Forschung, Administration, Lehre, you name it. Es spielt auch keine Rolle, ob dein Prompt einen kleinen Handgriff erleichtert oder einen komplexeren Arbeitsprozess unterstützt. Ziel ist es, vielfältige Anwendungsideen sichtbar zu machen.
Für Dich besteht hier die Gelegenheit zu zeigen, wie eine professionelle und kreative Nutzung von LLMs aussehen kann und somit Deinen peers zu helfen, auch ihren Arbeitsalltag neu zu gestalten.

Wir sammeln Vorschläge bis zum 24. März 2026 (12 Uhr).
Solltest du eingeladen werden, dein LLM‑Anwendungsbeispiel zu präsentieren, kontaktieren wir Dich in der ersten Aprilwoche. Wir werden Dich dann auch bitten, ergänzende Informationen für das finale Poster bereit zu stellen (voraussichtlich bis zum 12. April). Es wäre zudem großartig, wenn Du beim Eröffnungsevent der Galerie teilnehmen würdest. (Die Vernissage ist aktuell für den 5. Mai geplant). Wir versichern, dass wir darüber hinaus Deinen Aufwand bei der Erstellung des Ausstellungsmaterials minimal halten werden; Design und Druck der Poster übernehmen natürlich wir.

„Facts tell, stories sell“. Die bloße Auflistung der eigenen Laborergebnisse mag für eine Publikation in Fachzeitschriften genügen. Wer aber einen nachhaltigen Eindruck hinterlassen will – sei es zum Anstoßen von Forschungskooperationen bei Tagungen, zur Einwerbung von Fördermitteln bei öffentlichen Geldgebern und Industriepartnern, aber auch bei der Kurzpräsentation der eigenen wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit im Rahmen eines Vorstellungsgesprächs – umgibt seine fachlichen Leistungen mit einer ansprechenden Verpackung.
In diesem Workshop wird vermittelt, wie man aus einer Forschungsfrage eine spannende Geschichte konstruiert, und wie man diese mitreißend erzählt, um ihre Kernbotschaft nachhaltig im Gedächtnis eines spezifischen Auditoriums zu verankern. The event will be held in English and run for three days, on April 13, 2026 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on April 14 and 15, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
Project management is an essential competence for researchers. It supports the successful completion of complex tasks in everyday academic work and is equally relevant for future roles outside academia. Projects succeed when professional expertise is combined with solid management and self-management skills.
This workshop introduces the core principles of project management for doctoral researchers and postdocs without prior experience. Participants learn to plan and manage their projects systematically and to understand how structured project work contributes to effective research and long-term career development.
After the workshop you will be able to:
Plan and manage projects systematically by defining clear objectives, planning scope, resources, time and analysing stakeholders and risks Understand and implement the project life cycle including roles, activities, milestones, communication, risk management, work breakdown structure and project control Differentiate between classic, agile and hybrid project management approaches Identify typical pitfalls and apply suitable solutions Use relevant online project management tools
The workshop is practice-oriented, experience-based and interactive. All phases of project management are worked through using examples, and there is space for individual exchange of experiences.
You will leave the workshop with a practical toolkit for professional project management in science and beyond.

As a young researcher, you often take on leadership tasks for the first time – in your current position or in the course of your next career step. Being new to a leadership role can be challenging in itself while experiences might differ in terms of gender and personality.
This workshop will support you as a young leader to build a good understanding of what it means to establish a successful leadership style. Motivation, flexibility and transparency regarding communication and delegation are key factors to meet the demands of your role as a leader. An awareness of your inner attitude, self-reflection and a conscious development of your role with its various conditions help to create value in a positive and sustainable manner.
Which mindset enables you to fulfill the role as a leader convincingly? What are your expectations of your team members and what are their expectations of you as a leader? Where do you find yourself in terms of “command and control” versus “confidence in the ability of your members to organize themselves” and fulfill their tasks? Alongside these general leadership topics, it will be helpful to discuss if there are specific challenges or chances as a female or male leader and how to deal with them.

The basic principles of good research data management (RDM) and good scientific practice therefore include a systematic approach to the collection and, if necessary, subsequent use and evaluation of data, as well as to their storage and accessibility.
The course offers a concise introduction to the basics and aspects of research data management with the associated terms, most important models and processes and of course some helpful tools. A Q&A session is planned after the presentation, offering participants time to ask specific questions relating to their own RDM.

In dieser Erstberatung informieren und beraten wir Sie individuell, wie Sie mit herausfordernden Situationen und Konflikten umgehen können und verweisen ggf. an weitere Stellen. Gerne können Sie auch einen individuellen Beratungstermin (auch per MS Teams) vereinbaren. Jutta Klein-Hitpaß steht Ihnen für Fragen oder Terminabsprachen gerne zur Verfügung.

These can lead to conflicts, for example concerning the supervising relationship, within a working group, regarding financing issues, or concerning self-structured working. This challenging phase can also lead to personal problems. Should you find yourself in such or similar situations, you can find support at various advisory offices at KIT. KHYS offers open consultation hours in principle every Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. There you can safely discuss your situation. Stressmanagement ist heutzutage eine wichtige Kompetenz, um gesund und ausgeglichen die vielfältigen beruflichen und privaten Aufgaben und Anforderungen zu bewältigen. Gerade im Wissenschaftsalltag sind die Anforderungen und Erwartungen besonders hoch. Vielleicht fühlen Sie sich manchmal erschöpft oder angespannt und möchten gelassener durch die Promotion oder die Postdoc-Phase und Ihr Forschungsprojekt gehen – oder wollen einfach nur potenziellen Stressbelastungen und ihren Auswirkungen vorbeugen. Um gestärkt durch den Wissenschaftsalltag zu gehen, sind neben fachlicher Expertise und hoher Motivation auch eine gewisse Stressresistenz, ein gutes Selbstmanagement und ein Gleichgewicht zwischen Anspannung und Entspannung wichtig. Schon kleine Veränderungen können viel bewegen, wie beispielsweise innere Ansprüche zu hinterfragen, Energieräuber zu identifizieren und die persönliche Motivation, Selbstwirksamkeit und Produktivität zu steigern. The oral defense of the dissertation marks the final milestone of a PhD and poses unique communication challenges. This workshop is designed for doctoral candidates who wish to prepare intensively for their disputation.
Drawing on the participants’ individual experiences, the workshop focuses on developing effective presentation techniques and defense strategies. Participants learn how to interpret and present scientific findings clearly and how to respond confidently and appropriately to critical questions.
Key strategies for persuasive argumentation and rhetorical positioning during the defense are introduced and actively practiced in disputation simulations, which form the core of the workshop. If desired, the session can also address methods for managing stage fright and nervousness.

Have you just started your doctoral research period? And would like to know more about the services offered at KIT for doctoral researchers? Then come and join other German and international KIT PhD students at the welcome event for doctoral researchers. In a presentation, we will give you plenty of information on how to best profit from the doctoral research period (including information on research stays abroad and services offered at KIT). In addition, there will be two brief testimonials by more advanced fellow researchers. They will share their experiences with you concerning doing the PhD at KIT and will be happy to answer your questions. Im Workshop arbeiten wir mit holistischen Ansätzen des Veränderungslernens (Embodiment), die die Fortführung des Gelernten in der eigenen täglichen Arbeitspraxis ebenso befördern wie ein Online-Follow up (2h, 4 Wochen danach) im Nachgang des Workshops, mit dem die Changeprozesse der Teilnehmer*innen begleitet werden.

For young scientists, it is a regular and important task to present their work to others. At the same time, however, to persuasively communicate one’s ideas to colleagues or decision-making bodies is often considered challenging. Yet, being a good speaker is often just question of developing a set of skills and techniques such as the use of voice and body language, an effective presentation structure and the dynamic use of language.
This workshop provides participants the opportunity to improve their conference presentation skills. Throughout the two-day workshop, participants will be guided through interactive exercises to improve verbal and nonverbal communication, improve the ability to listen and react generously, and to integrate focusing techniques, which empower the speaker. Attention will also be given to structural and language aspects to improve clarity and flow of the talk.

A career in industry is an attractive option for many young scientists after completing their doctorate or postdoc phase. And quite a few actually choose to leave academia with the aspiration of entering responsible positions in the private sector.
However, given that employees in private enterprises often are required to both pursue different goals and work differently compared to employees in research institutions, scientists need to adopt different mindsets and competences for succeeding in a business environment. In addition to specialist professional knowledge, transferrable skills in the areas of management methods, leadership and communication are particularly required.
To give you a head start for a successful career entry in the private sector, this e-learning program provides initial insights into key competences specifically for the business context. A selection of short online courses examines a variety of relevant topics, taking examples from everyday business life as their starting point. Apart from conveying theoretical background information they offer practical advice and provide suggestions for exercises and self-reflexion. Competences acquired by working thouroughly on these e-learnings can also be helpful for similar tasks in other than industrial work contexts, of course.

On many occasions, young scientists communicate about their work, project or institution with the public or the media. This basic course of the National Institute for Science Communication (NaWik) gives participants an overview of communicating with target groups outside of academia and teaches first practical basics. The focus is on topics such as dimensions of science communication, the interaction of communicators and target groups, or dealing with the media.

Statistical Research Methods provides comprehensive, cross-disciplinary support for junior researchers who require a foundation or refresher in statistical methods. With a pre-programme diagnostic tool, signposted material and a modular format, the course supports researchers who want to evaluate and interpret statistics. It addresses the current statistics context, taking the interdisciplinary research environment into consideration.

Dieser Workshop führt in die Grundlagen des Projektmanagements ein und richtet sich an Promovierende und Postdocs ohne Vorkenntnisse. In der Wissenschaft arbeiten viele Promovierende und Postdocs in interdisziplinären Projekten oder leiten kleinere Teams – oft ohne formale Führungsfunktion. Dennoch müssen sie Aufgaben koordinieren, Entscheidungen herbeiführen und Kolleg*innen motivieren, ohne auf klassische Weisungsbefugnisse zurückgreifen zu können. Diese Form der „lateralen Führung" ist anspruchsvoll: Sie erfordert Klarheit über die eigene Rolle, kommunikatives Geschick und die Fähigkeit, Einfluss auf Augenhöhe zu nehmen.

Young scientists like you often face an onslaught of daily challenges like teaching, research projects or administrative tasks. Given that academics are also often expected to be flexible and constantly available, it is only natural that you feel at times overwhelmed. Moreover, those many last-minute, short-term assignments often take precedence and can keep you distracted from more important, long-term goals and ambitions as well as your personal interests.
To keep your priorities in sight, you thus need a carefully thought-out time and self-management system. In this workshop, you will learn to set priorities and forge realistic plans in order to balance the demands of research and your personal life goals.

Writing a doctoral thesis is very challenging. But if you take a smart approach early on, you are likely to reach your objectives faster and achieve superior results. This workshop focuses on the critical elements for a successful doctoral journey: Which mindsets, tools, and processes make a real difference on the way to a PhD? We concentrate on three areas: The efficient organization of tasks and notes, the productive communication with supervisors and the research community, and the structured reading and writing of academic papers. In each area, we will reflect on effective mindsets, tools, and workflows. The goal is for each participant to take away at least three specific ideas on how to substantially improve their own approach.

Ganz gleich, in welcher Branche Sie sich nach Ihrer Promotion etablieren: Ohne Projektmanagement geht es in der Regel nicht. Ob als Freiberufler oder als leitende Mitarbeiterin in großen Konzernen: wesentliche Teile der Arbeit werden oftmals als Projekt geplant und durchgeführt.
Mit besonderem Augenmerk auf die Bedürfnisse der Industrie führt der Workshop daher in die grundlegenden Werkzeuge und Techniken des Projektmanagements ein. Dabei wird immer wieder der Bezug zu verschiedenen Ansätzen und Standards hergestellt und auf Besonderheiten hingewiesen. The first aim of the event is to take a closer look at the current status quo and generate an understanding of your present situation. As part of a personal roadmap, you take the opportunity to consciously reflect on your current professional and private situation. You will look at your personal goals and wishes and derive concrete steps for your further career and skills development.
What have I already achieved? What skills particularly characterize me? What are my strengths? What is important to me? How do I visualize a successful future?
The first aim of the event is to take a closer look at the current status quo and generate an understanding of your present situation. Taking stock in this way will help you to take a focused approach to your life and career planning, create a basis for reflection for your longer-term professional and private decisions and work on your individual areas of development in a targeted manner.
In this way, you can develop goals for your further career planning from a holistic perspective and derive the first specific steps.

This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members. If you are currently not yet a member of KHYS, you can register here.
