This presents a number of challenges for students and staff. We consider a range of simple didactic instruments designed to facilitate students' learning in the context of the University of Zurich to raise awareness of the nature and use of English as a lingua franca in academic settings. Together, in our multi-cultural seminar group, we will review the implications of teaching students from different cultural backgrounds in addition to analysing and practising aspects of rhetorical effectiveness when lecturing in English. Aims: • Participants will be aware of and will have practised applying didactic tools that promote student-centered learning in a multicultural context. • Participants will have increased awareness of and had initial practice in applying rhetorical features of English that encourage clarity and understanding in learning and teaching. • Participants will be able to assess their current effectiveness in teaching in English and set goals for further development. Methods: Input with individual, partner and group exercises Teaching practice is filmed and participants are given a copy of the films after each session to reflect on feedback as part of the learning process. The seminar is intended for Teaching Assistants whose mother tongue is not English and who are currently, or will be teaching in English in the near future.
