Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung/Foundation - Sofja Kovalevskaja-Preis (Sofja Kovalevskaja Award)

Target group:
Foreign as well as German postdocs, if these already have been scientifically active abroad for a long time

Terms of application:
Eligible candidates have attained their doctorate or comparable academic degree (Ph.D., C.Sc. or equivalent),
completed with distinction less than six years prior to the application submission deadline and can show academic publications in internationally reviewed journals and / or publishing houses.

With the Sofia Kovalevskaya prize there is the opportunity to establish a working group at a research facility in Germany of the winner's choice and for a period of five years carry out a high-level and innovative research project of their own choice.

Eight prizes with up to EUR 1.65 m

Computer sciences

Terms of application:
Nominations will be reviewed for the candidate’s personal contributions to a major innovation that has impact on computing theory or practice. While a sufficient amount of time must have elapsed for the degree of impact to be assessed, the contribution should be relatively recent (typically within the last decade or so). While there are no specific requirements as to age or time since last degree requirements, the nominee typically would be approaching mid-career. Nominators are advised to review the list of previous winners of the award to gain an impression of its scope and nature.

The prize is awarded to candidates who are no longer at the very beginning of their scientific careers. Nomination requires that the prize-winning work was conducted in German speaking countries and in the researcher has succeeded in opening a whole new field that is ideally associated with his name and can contribute to medical innovation.
No self-nomination is possible. Proposals must be submitted on a application form that can be obtained from the KIT Research Office (FOR).

Prize money:
EUR 75,000

The prize is awarded every two years, alternating with the Otto Bayer Preis (Award).

The prize, which is not limited to a particular area, is addressed to scientists, who after their doctorate have already developed an independent academic profile. It is not to be construed as an acknowledgment of the thesis alone.
Self-nomination is not possible.
The KIT internal process has two stages.
