The Karlsruhe House of Young Scientists (KHYS) is the central institution for the promotion of junior researchers at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). We support doctoral researchers, postdocs, the Young Investigator Network (YIN), and doctoral programs. Our various offers are specifically targeted to promote junior KIT researchers and foster an open scientific and interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and knowledge.

We

  • individually advise, qualify, and support young scientists during their careers
  • further develop the support of young scientists at KIT and maintain the quality of the doctoral research phase
  • support coordinated research programs (e.g. research training groups) for the promotion of young scientists.

Call for applications: KHYS “Networking Grant”

The Networking Grant enables doctoral researchers at KIT to independently establish new important or beneficial international contacts. KHYS offers financial support with a travel subsidy of up to EUR 1,500. Submission of the application documents is open until Sunday, August 16, 2020 at the latest.

Call for applications: Helmholtz Doctoral Prize 2020

This year, KIT can nominate excellent young researchers in the following three Helmholtz research fields: earth and environment, key technologies/ information and matter. The successful candidates will be awarded a one-time prize in the amount of EUR 5,000. Nominations can be handed in by Tuesday, August 25, 2020 to KHYS.

Dissertation Award of the Friedrich und Elisabeth Boysen-Stiftung 2021

The Friedrich und Elisabeth Boysen-Stiftung again will award a prize at KIT for an outstanding dissertation in the field of environmental technology with special consideration of engineering solutions for the reduction of pollutants, noise and energy consumption. The prize is endowed with EUR 5,000. Application deadline is September 18, 2020.

Call for applications: KIT Doctoral Award 2019/20

KIT will grant the KIT Doctoral Awards for the 13th time in 2020. Extraordinary doctoral researchers who gained their degree in the academic year 2019/2020 will be awarded. The deadline for applications is October 4, 2020.

Evaluation der Nachwuchsförderung 2020

Im Rahmen des am KIT neu eingeführten Qualitätsmanagement für das Promotionswesen hat das KHYS am 4. Juni 2020 die Einladungen zur Teilnahme an den KIT-weiten Befragungen von Doktorand*innen und Erstbetreuer*innen versendet. Ein hoher Rücklauf von ausgefüllten Fragebögen ist die Voraussetzung, um die Ableitung von qualitätssichernden Maßnahmen aus den Ergebnissen zu ermöglichen. Das KHYS bittet daher alle Angeschriebenen sich an den Umfragen zu beteiligen.

The guidelines for the postdoc phase at KIT help establish transparency and reliability for postdoctoral researchers and their superiors during the postdoctoral phase at KIT. The guidelines define, among other things, what is understood by postdoctoral phase at KIT, which objectives should be pursued during this qualification phase and which responsibilities postdocs and superiors have respectively.

Advisory offices for young scientists - open consultation hours at KHYS

Junior researchers often face different challenges in their research period which could lead to conflicts. At KIT there are a variety of advisory offices which you can contact in cases of conflicts both in a work and in a personal context. KHYS for example offers open consultation hours from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. every Thursday in room 116. There you can safely discuss your situation.

Conventions of the doctoral researchers

All doctoral researchers that have been accepted at a KIT Department together form a convention. The conventions can give advice on issues pertaining to doctoral researchers and give recommendations to the organs of KIT. Every convention is headed by a board, elected from within the convention. Doctoral researchers wishing to become actively involved in the convention of their KIT Department are very welcome to do so.

Ombudspersons for doctoral researchers and supervisors at KIT

The Ombudspersons act as contact persons in cases of conflicts or disputes between doctoral researchers and supervisors during the doctoral research phase. Doctoral researchers and supervisors are free to initiate contact with any Ombudsperson at any point. They can decide for themselves whom they wish to address irrespective of they research background.
