The computer, the Internet or the laser led to groundbreaking innovations that lastingly changed people's ways of working and living. They are good examples of the so-called "technology push" innovations that have emerged from research. Push innovations are characterized by starting from  research results such as a particular technology and then turn them into offers that create impact in business or society. This is achieved either by better meeting needs of markets or humanity or creating new markets or possibilities.
 
Have you ever thought that your research could lead to new products or services, a start-up, or even help solve societal challenges? How much potential is there in your scientific project? And is starting a business for you or do alternative ways to let the world benefit from your research findings resonate with you? Discover the potential of your research topic and make something out of it!
 
During the workshop, the researchers will learn and apply approaches that turn research results into real-world impact, such as the Technology Application Selection (TAS) approach that was developed by EnTechnon. Participants will be introduced to the methodology through short theoretical impulses to generate new ideas and understand how to find possible applications for their research results. Furthermore, they will apply the method to their own research.
 
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
Characterize the specifications of “push innovation” Look at their own research from a new perspective and characterize its value in more detail Identify an application field for their own research Describe why it is important to align their own interests with those of users and further stakeholders to  realize a project successfully find out how to put their research into practice - be it a start-up, an industry collaboration, a civic project or something else

Unter anderem bietet das Karlsruhe House of Young Scientists (KHYS) in der Regel jeden Donnerstag von 15:00 bis 17:00 Uhr eine offene Sprechstunde zur Beratung in Konfliktfällen an. Dort können Sie in einem geschützten Rahmen Ihre Situation darlegen. In dieser Erstberatung informieren und beraten wir Sie individuell, wie Sie mit herausfordernden Situationen und Konflikten umgehen können und verweisen ggf. an weitere Stellen. Gerne können Sie auch einen individuellen Beratungstermin (auch per MS Teams) vereinbaren. Jutta Klein-Hitpaß steht Ihnen für Fragen oder Terminabsprachen gerne zur Verfügung.

These can lead to conflicts, for example concerning the supervising relationship, within a working group, regarding financing issues, or concerning self-structured working. This challenging phase can also lead to personal problems. Should you find yourself in such or similar situations, you can find support at various advisory offices at KIT. KHYS offers open consultation hours in principle every Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. There you can safely discuss your situation. During this initial consultation, we offer information and advice on how to deal with challenging situations and conflicts. If applicable, we will refer you to other advisory offices. You are also welcome to make an appointment (also for an MS Teams meeting). Jutta Klein-Hitpaß will be happy to answer any questions you may have or to offer you an appointment.

Whether developing a research project or implementing one, problem-solving is the researcher’s daily business. However, finding solutions to problems – irrespective of whether they are of conceptual or practical nature, whether they are big or small – can be time-consuming and feel frustrating, particularly once you encountered a mental block or seem to have exhausted the range of conceivable options.
 
Problem-solving, however, does not need to be agonizing. Quite the contrary, a small change in perspective or a little shift in thinking about a problem is often sufficient for an original solution to emerge. This workshop will introduce tactics for inducing more "Aha-Moments" in your work. Based on insights from the scientific study of problem-solving and creativity, you will learn tools facilitating greater originality and efficiency when needed.
 
We will also explore how recently introduced AI-powered chatbots such as ChatGTP can support your creative process.

After completion of their doctorate and postdoc, many are faced with the challenge of embarking on a new career path outside academia. While considering your options and how to find a suitable position, you may be surprised to find that:
 
More than two thirds of all jobs in Germany are awarded without job advertisement.
 
This workshop aims to give you the edge over others and to introduce and practice methods for accessing the hidden labour market. Contacts and networks are often decisive in this context. You will learn how to use them strategically and stay authentic. Some contacts you already have, others you can make. Through these contacts, you can at the same time get first-hand information about professional fields, concrete work tasks and company cultures as well as convey your skills in a more convincing manner and gain personal referrals. This will help you to be a more credible candidate, to be invited for interviews and to get the job that is right for you.

Developing successful grant applications is an essential skill for a career in research. In this workshop you will learn tools and background information that, on the one hand, will help you to efficiently develop your research idea into a research project which matches your target funding program and, on the other hand, to write it up in a grant proposal of high quality.
 
Objectives:
Get an overview on funding program and how you can use them for driving your career as a researcher Develop your own idea for a research project proposal into a first work-plan Understand how to match your research project to the funding program in order to increase the potential to be funded Understand the basics of budget planning Acquire basic skills for formulating objectives, progress beyond the state of the art and impact Try out a set of tools to efficiently develop a research proposal.

Presentation of background information Applying the RaumZeit toolkit to your own idea for a research project Group work Feedback from trainer and peers  
Please note: Participants who enter the workshop with an idea for a research project will benefit the most from its program. The idea may be newly developed, or you have been thinking about it for quite some time. The workshop envisages that you will ideally continue to work on your proposal between the workshop sessions. Please plan time for this accordingly. However, a prior project idea is not a pre-requisite for successfully participating.
We will have optional homework, so please plan additional time between the sessions for further developing your building blocks for a grant proposal.

Have you just started your doctoral research period? And would like to know more about the services offered at KIT for doctoral researchers? Then come and join other German and international KIT PhD students at the welcome event for doctoral researchers. In a presentation, we will give you plenty of information on how to best profit from the doctoral research period (including information on research stays abroad and services offered at KIT). In addition, there will be two brief testimonials by more advanced fellow researchers. They will share their experiences with you concerning doing the PhD at KIT and will be happy to answer your questions. At the end of the English-language event, there will be time for some networking during a get-together involving snacks and drinks.

We would in particular like to welcome those who have recently started their doctorate – however, the event is open to all German and international KIT doctoral researchers.

The Welcome Event takes place four times a year.

The KIT Postdoc Meeting is thought as a platform for you to get in touch with other KIT postdocs and their research projects and to inform yourself about relevant topics concerning the postdoc phase.
 
We will start with a short keynote speech on a topic of your choice. Following the keynote lecture, two KIT postdocs each can briefly present themselves and their research project. All participants are cordially invited to conclude the evening with a dinner at a restaurant on self-payment basis.

Die Veranstaltung findet an zwei Tagen statt, am 25. und 26. Juni 2024.
 
Der letzte große Meilenstein der Promotion ist die mündliche Verteidigung der Arbeit, die besondere kommunikative Herausforderungen mit sich bringt. Dieses Training richtet sich an Promovierende, die sich intensiv auf ihre Disputation vorbereiten wollen.
 
Der thematische Schwerpunkt des Workshops widmet sich der Fragerunde innerhalb der Prüfung: Wie gehe ich mit schwierigen Fragen um? Wie reagiere ich auf kritische bis provozierende Fragen? Wie kann ich damit umgehen, wenn ich die Antwort auf eine Frage nicht weiß? Was mache ich bei einem „Black-Out“?
 
Zu Beginn des Workshops verschaffen wir uns einen Überblick über Ablauf und Bedeutung einer Disputation. Wir sammeln Fragen, die typischerweise in Disputationen auftreten.
 
Im Anschluss werden fünf Strategien für eine überzeugende argumentative sowie rhetorische Positionierung während der Disputation vermittelt. Diese werden in Einzel- und Gruppenarbeit trainiert sowie im wichtigsten Bestandteil des Workshops – den Disputations-Simulationen – von den Promovierenden aktiv umgesetzt. Bei Bedarf kann zudem der Umgang mit Lampenfieber thematisiert werden.
 
Workshop Inhalte:
Sie haben einen Überblick über Ablauf, Bedeutung und Funktion einer Disputation. Sie kennen typische Fragen der Prüfungskommission. Sie können auf kritische bis provozierende Fragen souverän reagieren. Sie haben Vorbereitungswerkzeuge für erwartbare Fragen zu Ihrem Thema. Sie haben einen Überblick über Ihre Stärken und Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten im Vortrag und insbesondere in der Fragerunde. Umgang mit Stress, Stressbewältigungstechniken.

The course advises young scientists on how to publish the hard-won results of their research and to plan an appropriate publication strategy for their early academic career. The course will begin by exploring why researchers in the sciences should publish their results. It will then guide participants through the processes involved in getting an article or paper published in an academic journal, including:
Reasons for publishing your work and some of the key factors you need to consider when getting started
Navigating the pre-submission stage, from planning your time to preparing supplementary material, information and metadata
The importance of review for quality control and the requirements of the review process
Relevant resources, platforms and social media that can help ensure you publish in an impactful way

Statistical Methods for Research is targeted at young scientists who require a foundation course in statistics, specifically in the quantification of variability, providing students with the practical techniques they will need to conduct statistical analysis at postgraduate level and beyond. This course takes a cross-disciplinary approach and is compatible with all major statistics packages such as SPSS, GenStat, Minitab and Stata. It is rich with scenarios, worked examples, practical applications and interactive statistical models.
 
The course comprises the presentation of concepts, individual computer-based exercises for consolidation and other interactive learning activities. A major component of the course is analysing data through the use of mainstream statistics packages. This will enable students to gain statistical skills commonly used today in evidence-based decision making, driven by data gathered during the research process, such as the use of estimates, confidence intervals and hypothesis tests, and the building of statistical models. The following four areas are included in the course:
• Describing data well: Descriptive statistics
• Making good generalisations: Inferential statistics
• Formulating and testing statistical hypotheses
• Fitting appropriate statistical models and interpreting their output.
 
The course contains different tracks for the disciplines of Engineering, Natural Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Social Sciences and Business.
 
Statistical Methods for Research is based on a highly successful course from the University of Reading which has recorded an average improvement of 125% in student’s performances.
 
Duration of this course: 12,5 h

As a young researcher, you often take on leadership tasks for the first time – in your current position or in the course of your next career step. Being new to a leadership role can be challenging in itself while experiences might differ in terms of gender and personality.
 
This workshop will support you as a young leader to build a good understanding of what it means to establish a successful leadership style. Motivation, flexibility and transparency regarding communication and delegation are key factors to meet the demands of your role as a leader. An awareness of your inner attitude, self-reflection and a conscious development of your role with its various conditions help to create value in a positive and sustainable manner.
 
Which mindset enables you to fulfill the role as a leader convincingly? What are your expectations of your team members and what are their expectations of you as a leader? Where do you find yourself in terms of “command and control” versus “confidence in the ability of your members to organize themselves” and fulfill their tasks? Alongside these general leadership topics, it will be helpful to discuss if there are specific challenges or chances as a female or male leader and how to deal with them.

In problem-solving, an often untapped source of greater creativity lies in the activities that precede the actual “thinking” about possible solutions. As numerous instances in the history of science demonstrate, answers to pressing problems often are available all along but go unnoticed for some time due to our tendency to observe superficially: when confronted with a problem, we often take the situation as given or jump-start right away into searching for solutions. By skipping deliberate inspection, we run the risk of overlooking helpful features or misinterpret information. (As an approximation of the potential of investing in “observation” for scientific problem-solving, conduct a Google Scholar search with the term “overlooked” and your discipline.)
 
In this workshop, we explore the nature of human perception and its relation to problem-solving – both in theory and in practice. We dive into the many ways how information intake and processing can be distorted by our brains; through engaging activities, you will train your ability to observe situations more consciously and to question your implicit assumptions about them. As a result, you will learn how to “see more” and thus advance your ability to solve problems.   
 
Please note: This workshop will be implemented partially on-site and online. The respective format for each session will be announced prior to the beginning of the course.

Forschende müssen ihre Arbeit regelmäßig für verschiedene Zielgruppen präsentieren – auf wissenschaftlichen Konferenzen, in Laborsitzungen sowie bei Tagen der offenen Tür und anderen Informationsveranstaltungen. Häufig stehen ihnen dabei nur wenige Minuten zur Verfügung, daher gilt es, das eigene Forschungsthema möglichst prägnant und verständlich zu vermitteln.
 
In der Veranstaltung erwerben die Teilnehmenden sowohl Grundlagenwissen als auch anwendbare, praktische Kenntnisse zur Wissenschaftskommunikation. Unter Anleitung des Dozierenden erfahren sie in praktischen Übungen, wie ein wirkungsvoller Vortrag aussehen kann. Mit Hilfe einer Videoanalyse erkennen die Teilnehmenden ihre individuellen Stärken und optimieren Schritt für Schritt ihre Kommunikationsfähigkeiten. Sie lernen auch, wie sie auf kritische Fragen aus dem Plenum reagieren können.

The workshop provides a compact introduction to the basics of business administration for those who have not studied it. In addition to the explanation of typical economic thinking and theories, this primarily concerns insights into the areas of corporate management, organization, controlling and marketing. In this workshop, knowledge is imparted that is needed after a job change to the business world in order to be able to understand and classify the processes in companies. At the same time, however, this is also increasingly relevant for scientific activities, especially in the area of third-party funded projects; for the preparation of one's own self-employment it is essential. Trying out and practicing what has been learned also focuses on areas that can already be used in your current professional phase.
 
The following topics will be covered:
Business administration and economics in a nutshell: Which theories should you know and what do you need to keep in mind when working in a market-oriented environment? Internal management: How are processes within companies organized, implemented and controlled? What does corporate management, controlling and marketing involve? Founders, managers and myself: How can I use business knowledge in the future? And which insights can help me right now?  
The workshop is interactive and dynamic. Sequences of trainer input alternate with individual and group work. The participants will be able to contribute their own experiences and get answers on all their questions.

Stressmanagement ist heutzutage eine wichtige Kompetenz, um gesund und ausgeglichen die vielfältigen beruflichen und privaten Aufgaben und Anforderungen zu bewältigen. Vielleicht fühlen Sie sich manchmal erschöpft oder angespannt und möchten gelassener durch die Promotion oder die Postdoc-Phase und Ihr Forschungsprojekt gehen – oder wollen einfach nur potentiellen Stressbelastungen vorbeugen. Um gestärkt durch den Wissenschaftsalltag zu gehen, sind neben fachlicher Expertise und hoher Motivation auch eine gewisse Stressresistenz, ein gutes Selbstmanagement und ein Gleichgewicht zwischen Anspannung und Entspannung wichtig. Dieser Workshop bietet Ihnen ein abwechslungsreiches Angebot aus Informationen, Selbstreflexionen und praktischen Übungen für ein erfolgreiches Stressmanagement.

Der Weg zur Doktorarbeit steckt voller Herausforderungen. Doch wer sich von Anfang an eine kluge Herangehensweise überlegt, erreicht schneller seine Ziele und erhält bessere Ergebnisse. Der Workshop konzentriert sich auf die zentralen Stellschrauben für eine erfolgreiche Promotion: Welche Mindsets, Werkzeuge und Arbeitsprozesse machen einen echten Unterschied auf dem Weg zur Promotion? Dabei fokussieren wir uns auf drei Schlüsselbereiche für eine erfolgreiche Dissertation: Die effiziente Organisation von Aufgaben und Notizen, den produktiven Austausch mit der Forschungsgemeinschaft sowie das strukturierte Lesen und Verfassen von Texten. Für jeden Bereich reflektieren wir effektive Mindsets, Werkzeuge und Arbeitsabläufe. Ziel ist, dass jeder Teilnehmende mindestens drei Ideen mitnimmt, wie er/sie die eigene Herangehensweise substanziell verbessern kann.

Die Veranstaltung findet an zwei Tagen statt, am 17. und 18. Oktober 2024.
 
Viele Forschende, insbesondere Promovierende und Postdocs, betrachten ihre Tätigkeiten in erster Linie aus fachlicher Perspektive. Projektmanagement wird daher als eine Kompetenz wahrgenommen, die zukünftige Arbeitgebende außerhalb der Wissenschaft erwarten. In der Tat ist ein Grundverständnis von Projektmanagement ein wertvoller Karrierebaustein, sei dies innerhalb oder außerhalb der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit. Denn auch der Arbeitsalltag in der Wissenschaft ist stark durch Projektarbeit bestimmt. Viele komplexe wissenschaftliche Tätigkeiten lassen sich nur mithilfe eines guten Projektmanagements effizient und zielgerichtet bewältigen. Denn: erfolgreich sind Projekte dann, wenn die wichtigen Management- und (Selbst-)Führungsaufgaben ebenso beherrscht werden, wie die fachlichen Aspekte. Dies gilt innerhalb wie außerhalb der Wissenschaft.
 
Dieser Workshop führt in allgemeine Grundlagen des Projektmanagements ein. Zielgruppe dieses Workshops sind Nachwuchsforschende ohne besondere Vorkenntnisse in Projektmanagement, die sich mit dieser Arbeitsmethode vertraut machen möchten, verstärkt in oder mit Projektstrukturen arbeiten und sich in diesem Bereich professionalisieren wollen.

Verfügen Sie über das Handwerkszeug, um systematisch Projekte zu planen und durchzuführen: Projektziele SMART definieren, Planung von Umfang, Ressourcen, Zeit, Stakeholderanalyse, Risikoanalyse Kennen Sie die Phasen des Projektlebenszyklus und verstehen diese: Rollen, Aktivitäten, Meilensteine, Kommunikation im Projekt, Risikomanagement, Projektstrukturplan, Projektsteuerung Haben Sie sich mit neuen Lösungsansätzen für ihre Projektherausforderungen befasst: klassisches, agiles und hybrides Projektmanagement Wissen Sie um typische Fallstricke und Hürden aus der Projektpraxis Verfügen Sie über einen Einblick in wichtige Online-Tools des Projektmanagements

Researchers are responsible for ensuring that their own conduct complies with the standards of good research practice. The workshop will introduce basic issues of research integrity by addressing important guidelines of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and specific regulations of KIT for safeguarding good research practice – relevant for every early career researcher@KIT.

Publications of research results is the currency in modern science. It might not be your favourite occupation, but it is a decisive one, strongly determining your future research and career opportunities. In this course, you will be introduced to the process of writing a scientific paper. In order to deepen and apply this knowledge, you will also actually produce a manuscript based on your research data (and one that might serve as the foundation for a journal submission). Questions about other forms of text like conference papers can also be discussed.

Using tools and approaches from “traditional” project management it’s difficult to handle project environments that are changing and don’t allow to foresee what exactly the development or project requirements will be. First time developed and applied in IT agile project management nowadays is applied in many different fields that have to consider changes or rapid developments in their surroundings. This approach allows to flexibly respond and adapt to these changes.
 
The workshop agile project management (PM) introduces the participants to the basic approach and ideas (agile values and agile manifesto) as well as to tools and processes applied in agile PM. We will take a look at scrum as one of the agile frameworks and at IT-tools one can use in agile PM (Jira, Trello). The workshop will not only introduce theoretically but focus on applying tools to gain a better understanding - therefore participants are invited to actively contribute.
 
Target group: Doctoral Researchers and Postdocs with no or little knowledge in agile PM.
 
Basic knowledge of classic PM is assumed.

Young scientists like you often face an onslaught of daily challenges like teaching, research projects or administrative tasks. Given that academics are also often expected to be flexible and constantly available, it is only natural that you feel at times overwhelmed. Moreover, those many last-minute, short-term assignments often take precedence and can keep you distracted from more important, long-term goals and ambitions as well as your personal interests. In order to keep your priorities in sight, you thus need a carefully thought-out time and self-management system. In this workshop, you will learn to set priorities and forge realistic plans in order to balance the demands of research and your personal life goals.

Self-organization and self-motivation: increase productivity and efficiency Defining personal goals and setting priorities Establishing and/or optimizing daily and weekly planning Recognizing and using your individual performance curve Setting parameters for working effectively, maximizing time efficiency Energy management and work-life balance

In diesem Workshop bietet sich Ihnen die Möglichkeit, sich – gerade als angehende oder junge Führungskraft – gelingend in die neue Funktion Führung einzufinden. Es geht um Ihre innere Haltung, um Selbstreflexion, um Bewusstwerdung. Desweiteren geht es um Rollenklarheit, um die gegenseitigen (teils unausgesprochenen) Erwartungen und Herangehensweisen von Ihnen als Führungskraft und von Ihren Mitarbeitenden in Bezug auf Führung und Aufgabenerledigung. Dabei bewegen Sie sich stets in dem Spannungsfeld Ansagepflicht und Kontrolle Ihrerseits versus Selbstorganisation Ihrer Mitarbeitenden und das Vertrauen in Ihre Mitarbeitenden andererseits. Die Informationsveranstaltung führt Sie an die wichtigsten rechtlichen Regelungen heran und bietet einen Überblick über die folgenden vier Themenbereiche, die für Nachwuchsforschende von besonderer Bedeutung sind:
 
Urheberrecht in Grundzügen für Forschung und Lehre Zitatrecht und Bildrechte Autoren- und Verlagsrechte Creative-Commons-Lizenzen und Open Content  
Wie kann ich Ideen oder Gedankengänge anderer Personen in legitimer Weise für meine eigene Publikation verwenden? Unter welchen Bedingungen kann ich Bildmaterialien benutzen? Wie bewahre ich die Rechte an meinen eigenen Publikationen? Wie kann ich fremde Materialien in meiner Lehrveranstaltung einsetzen? Was ist eine Creative-Commons-Lizenz und wie kann ich diese Lizenzen nutzen? Das Seminar behandelt typische Fragen, die sich in der Forschungsarbeit, der Lehre sowie bei Dissertationen und anderen wissenschaftlichen Publikationen stellen.
 
Sie lernen das Urheberrechtssystem und die wichtigsten Regelungen für Forschung und Lehre in einem Überblick kennen. In einem zweiten Teil werden wir auf die Autoren- und Verlagsrechte eingehen. Im dritten Teil möchten wir Sie mit dem Zitatrecht vertraut machen. Wir werden dabei einen Schwerpunkt auf die Bildrechte legen. Im vierten und letzten Teil beschäftigen wir uns mit Open Content. As a scientist, you regularly communicate your expertise to various audiences – not only to people from within your scientific community but also to collaborators from different fields, grant bodies, students, the general public. When writing for or speaking to others, however, you must overcome multiple obstacles for your message to be understood, such as peoples’ short attention span, differences in prior knowledge and ignorance about your technical language. If you do not design your communication with these barriers in mind, your ideas are unlikely to reach your intended audience.
 
To enable scientists sharing their knowledge with their diverse audiences, this workshop will introduce some versatile strategies for comprehensible communication. Learn, for example, how your topics can be portrayed so that they capture the attention of experts and non-experts alike and how you can effortlessly convey the meaning of discipline-specific concepts. As a result, your papers, posters and presentations will be readily understood.
 
We will also explore how recently introduced AI-powered chatbots such as ChatGTP can support you in designing comprehensible communication.

Becoming a postdoc is a pivotal, yet highly selective career step towards research independence and tenure. Preparing for future research leadership, the workshop helps early career researchers to assess their current position, align career aspirations with longer-term research goals and develop a road map for achieving them in the individual setting. Practice scenarios provide guidance on how to exploit funding opportunities effectively to build resources and capabilities for further career advancement.
 
By participating in the workshop, you will be better equipped to:
take responsibility for your career and decision making, understand the critical success factors for a sustainable research career, apply strategic approaches to advance both your career and your research, design fundable projects for different research settings, identify and exploit funding opportunities, prepare effective grant proposals, develop yourself as a principal investigator.  
This highly interactive workshop employs theoretical input, plenary discussions, individual and small group work, practice scenarios, experience sharing and expert advice. Pre-workshop activities account for varying levels of research experience and will be provided 10 days before the workshop. Please allow for an additional 3-4 hours to complete the activities.

Zeitschriftenaufsätze, wird mittlerweile viel genutzt. As part of a personal roadmap, you have the opportunity to consciously reflect on your current professional and private situation. You will look at your personal goals and wishes and derive concrete steps for your further career and skills development.
 
What have I already achieved? What skills particularly characterize me? What are my strengths? What is important to me? How do I visualize a successful future?
 
The first aim of the event is to take a closer look at the current status quo and generate an understanding of your present situation. Taking stock in this way will help you to take a focused approach to your life and career planning, create a basis for reflection for your longer-term professional and private decisions and work on your individual areas of development in a targeted manner. 
 
In this way, you can develop goals for your further career planning from a holistic perspective and derive the first specific steps.
