Supervising Doctoral Researchers (two-day) [ONLINE-SEMINAR]

Tuesday, 17 May 2022, 9:00-16:00
Online

The workshop will be held in English and run for two days, on May 17 and 18, 2022.

Supervising doctoral candidates can be a challenging new task for postdocs. Usually, it involves not only new responsibilities, but also a new and complex social role. Besides advanced scientific skills it requires insights in interpersonal dynamics and of course well-founded communicational skills, e.g. to provide helpful continuous feedback on research progress.  In addition, competences in leadership and dealing with conflictual situations are crucial, too. This workshop aims to build your confidence in your new role and support you in becoming a good doctoral supervisor.

The workshop starts with the complexity of the relationship between supervising and supervised researcher. It will help you to identify, untangle and clarify the different roles you hold and the different expectations that come with them. You will be given tools to structure and improve communication, reflect on different supervision approaches and how to use them, and learn how to avoid and manage conflict.

Contents

  • Prerequisites for supervision
  • Entering a new role: Social roles and their consequence for the supervisor-supervisee relationship

  • Different approaches to supervision – what is your style?
