Alexander von Humboldt Foundation – Feodor-Lynen-Programm

Target group:
postdocs (up to four years after doing their doctorate), doctoral researchers in the last stages of doing their doctorate 

Area of studies:
All

Terms of application:
Direct applications are submitted directly to the foundation. The Humboldt Foundation has changed its application process in the Feodor Lynen Research Fellowship Program. Those interested can now apply exclusively online and upload their application documents. Doctorate should have been completed no more than four years prior. Host abroad must be a foreign scientist previously sponsored by the Humboldt Foundation. There must be scientific publications and a research post must be confirmed. Contact at KIT is ▶ Oliver Kaas.

Period/amount of funding:
Research projects of six to 24 months; in financing the foundation seeks a contribution from the host. Scholarship benefits consist of a basic monthly amount and a monthly. Expatriation allowance, which can vary depending on location and marital status, in addition: coverage of (return) travel costs, repatriation aid, alumni sponsorship.

Canon Foundation in Europe – Research Fellowships (Incoming & Outgoing)

Target group:
European and Japanese researchers

Area of studies:
All

Application:
Candidates are required to have obtained at least a Master's degree within the previous ten years. Exceptional candidates who obtained their qualification more than ten years prior to application will also be considered. Such candidates are required to provide further supporting information in their application. The European Fellowship holders pursue a period of research in Japanwhereas the Japanese Fellows do their research at host institutions in Europe.

Funding period/ funding amount:
3-12 months; The financial support for Research Fellows ranges from 22,500 Euro to 27,500 Euro per year and pro-rata for different periods.

Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina (German Academy of Natural Sciences Leopoldina) – Leopoldina Postdoc Scholarship

Target group:
postdoctoral researchers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland up to seven years after finishing their doctorate

Natural sciences, medicine

Terms of application:
Applications may be submitted by the current head of the institute or a Leopoldina member or by the candidates themselves, if they are not employed.

Period/amount of funding:
Two years (extension possible) with EUR 1,750 for German applicants plus possible child and foreign allowances, as well as travel subsidies. Payment rates for candidates from Austria and Switzerland are set individually currently between EUR 2,100 and EUR 3,000.

Deadline:
Applications can be submitted at any time. Processing time is between three to four months.

Deutsches Historisches Institut Paris (German Historical Institute Paris) – Karl-Ferdinand-Werner-Fellowship

Target group:
postdoctoral scientists

Area of studies:
Funding may be granted in addition to individual archive and library research in Paris and the surrounding area also to stays that serve Franco-German scientific cooperation (e.g., by the design of larger projects, research groups, etc.).

Terms of application:
Guest rooms with Internet access and access to the institute and library infrastructure are made available. Contacts with French colleagues can be arranged.

Funding period: August - September (stay of between one and four weeks)

Deutsches Historisches Institut Paris (German Historical Institute Paris) – Scholarships

Target group:
doctoral researchers, candidates for habilitation

Area of studies:
French, Franco-German and Western European history

Terms of application:
The DHIP supports ongoing research projects in their implementation (mobility grants, resident fellowships) and the development of new research projects (research start scholarships).

Period/amount of funding:
The limit of the duration of the scholarships depends on the extent of the necessary research abroad for a maximum of six months. Funding: EUR 2,000 a month for candidates with completed habilitation and postdoctoral researchers EUR 1,500 a month for doctoral researchers

Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and Ministry of Science, Technology and Space (MOST) – German-Israeli Cooperation in Water Technology Research) – Young Scientists Exchange Program (Inoming & Outgoing)

Target group:
Israeli and German diploma/M.Sc.-students, postgraduates, doctoral researchers, and postdoctoral researchers

Area of studies:
German-Israeli cooperation in water technology research.

Terms of application:
The scholarship is aimed at (young) scientists who wish to spend a training period in Israel or Germany for up to 6 months, but not less than 1 month. In order to apply successfully, the doctorate has to have been granted within the last three years. An informal application suffices.

Period/amount of funding:
Accommodation and living expenses (as lump sums): EUR 1.830, EUR 61 for additional days as lump sums, travel, extraordinary expenses: only on account *) The increased lump sum for the first month includes the costs for additional insurances (health, accident, luggage, private liability) that shall be contracted by the candidates for the period of their stay abroad according to the agreement.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) / Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) – JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme (short-term & standard)

Target group:
doctoral researchers and postdocs

Area of studies:
All

Terms of application:
Research projects at universities and selected research institutions in Japan are supported. For postdocs the doctoral degree may not be older than six years. Doctoral researchers must formally prove their status and finish doing their degree within two years of receiving the grant. German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) / Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) – JSPS Summer Program in Japan

Target group:
doctoral and postdoctoral researchers at German universities

Area of studies:
All

Terms of application:
Support is granted for a short research stay held between mid-June and mid-August at a Japanese university or a selected research institution (a list of the host institutes can be found on the DAAD website).

Period/amount of funding:
Support is provided for a stay between June and August 2018. The scholarship cannot be extended.
The scholarship includes the following: International round-trip ticket, scholarship rate of JPY 534,000 yen as well as health and accident insurance.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) – Language and practice in the People's Republic of China

Target group:
Graduates and young scientists

Area of studies:
Natural sciences, law, social sciences, political sciences and engineering sciences as well as architecture

Terms of application:
Studies must be completed when the scholarship starts. Target group are explicitly candidates with little or no experience of China.

Period/amount of funding:
The funding period is 16 months (cannot be extended) and includes a stay (intensive Chinese language course and internship) in China, as well as a two-week preparatory course in Germany (Bochum).
Monthly payment: Based on the destination country + travel expense subsidy + insurances + fees for language course

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) – MEXT – Research stays in Japan

Target group:
doctoral researchers, postdocs

Area of studies:
All

Terms of application:
Support is provided for study visits as part of a research or supplementary or postgraduate course in Japan.

Period/amount of funding:
One and a half or two year research or study stay from April 2023 to March 2025 or October 2023 to March 2025; scholarship includes a monthly scholarship rate of between 143,000 and 145,000 yen, flight tickets for outward and return flights, tuition fees, etc., depending on academic degree.

Deadline:
November 2, 2023 for following subjects: Architecture, Arts, Performance Arts, Design, Movie and Music. Any other subjects may apply until February 29, 2024.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) – Program of project-based personnel exchange (PPP) 

Target group:
Graduates, doctoral researchers, postdocs, scientists

Area of studies:
Varies, depending on the program agreements with the partner country

Terms of application:
The aim of the program is to strengthen cooperation between international and German research groups. It is a bilateral program with 29 foreign partner countries. Contact at KIT is ▶ Oliver Kaas.

Period/amount of funding:
Normally up to two years, with a possible extension for a further year (varies by destination country). Basic funding of the project must be secured by other means. The stay is then generally one month (with exceptions).

Target group:
postdocs (up to four years after doing their doctorate); doctoral researchers in the last stages of doing their doctorate ( at the start of the scholarship the doctoral degree must have been completed)

All

Terms of application:
The program is open for all countries. The program supports the implementation of independent research projects at self-selected host institutions. Important for the selection process are: academic qualifications, publications, experience in project planning, fit of the application (project, host organization, career plans), personality, extra-curricular activities. Period/amount of fundoing:
Short-term and longer term grants (3-6 months). Monthly grant rate: EUR 1,750 to + surcharges and travel costs etc.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) – Postdoctoral Researchers International Mobility Experience (PRIME) (Incoming & Outgoing)

Target group:
Postdocs

Area of studies:
All

Terms of application:
The funding includes a 12-month international and a six month integration phase at a German university at which the funding recipients are employed over the entire period as a postdoctoral researcher. The application form is available in the DAAD application portal. With the exception of the certificates, all documents must be submitted in English, as the evaluation and selection will be carried out by international experts and an international commission.

Period/amount of funding:
The duration of the support is 18 months, of which the first 12 months are spent abroad (foreign phase) and the remaining six months in Germany (reintegration phase). The support is provided through a temporary employment, which is remunerated in accordance with TV-L salary group 13.

Deadline:
As a rule, the announcement of the call for applications is published on May 1 with a deadline for applications of August 31; the selection is usually made in February and the earliest funding start is June 1

German Israeli Foundation – G.I.F. NEXUS Program (Incoming & Outgoing)

Target group:
young German and Israeli-born scientists who want to establish contacts in the respective other country

Terms of application:
Electronic application, requirement is a doctorate dating back no longer than eight years at the starting time of the grant. Within the project year a visit to the other country for a minimum of seven working days is mandatory.

Period/amount of funding:
Funding israeli-german collaboration for up to four years. There is a maximum funding of 200.000 Euros per year.

For single applications there is a maximum funding of 25.000 Euros for up to one year.

HIDA Trainee Network – Helmholtz-wide exchange program

Target group:
Doctoral and postdoctoral researchers

Area of studies:
Information & data sciences

Terms of Application:
The exchange must take place between two Helmholtz Centers. The funding is awarded in particular on the basis of the applicant’s motivation, the quality and originality of the project, and its basic feasibility within the timeframe of the planned research stay. There must be a clear connection to the information science area. The program is intended to promote exchange between Helmholtz Centers and researchers and to enable young scientists to expand their portfolios.

Period/amount of funding:
One- to three-month-long research stays at another Helmholtz Center.

Two funding options:

1. Funding for travel and material expenses (up to 2000€ per month) for Helmholtz‑internal doctoral and postdoctoral researchers

2. Receive a research grant (2860€ + subsidies) for Helmholtz-affiliated postdocs

Deadline:

At the start of 2024, HIDA will conduct an interim evaluation of its exchange programs and make adjustments if necessary. The next call for applications is expected to take place in fall 2024.

InnovationCampus "Future Mobility" (ICM) – Short-term Grants for Talents

Target group:
doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT or University of Stuttgart

Area of studies:
The research topic must have a clear connection to the Innovation Campus “Future Mobility”.

Terms of application:
Within the framework of the “Future Mobility Grants”, funding is provided for stays abroad lasting several weeks. The research project at a university abroad should be an extension of the applicant’s doctoral thesis or scientific work. Details of the research project must be discussed with the host partner institute before the application is submitted. Short-term study trips or participation in meetings and conferences are not funded by the “Short-term Grants for Talents”.

Period/amount of funding:
The funding amount for the grant is based on the rates for doctoral researchers of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and depends on the duration of the stay as well as the destination country.

Deadline:
In principle, nominations/applications can be submitted at any time, but the reviews take place at four meetings per year.

Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID) – Mexican Government Scholarship Program for International Students

Target group:
doctoral researchers and postdocs

Area of studies:
Not eligible are: business administration, accounting, plastic surgery, marketing, advertising, dentistry and odontology, as well as related fields

Terms of application:
Selection criteria: academic excellence of the candidate, the intended field of study or specialization in Mexico is related to the applicant´s academic and job history, the area of study has a direct impact on the development of the applicant´s country, the program must relate to specific current or approved projects that have an impact on the development of the applicant´s country.

Period/amount of funding:
1- 12 months. A monthly stipend of five times the value of The Unit of Measure and Actualization (UMA) for doctoral programs and research periods, postdoctoral fellowships and Medical specialties and subspecialties. During 2017, the stipend was calculated with the minimum salary in Mexico City and was equivalent of MXN 12,251.00 (approximately USD 665.52).

Please note the costs listed in the call which are not covered by the stipend.

The scholarships are intended to carry out a project of the applicant's own choice in cooperation with a scientific host at a partner university in Ontario, which provides the necessary research facilities at the host institute and is available as a contact for the implementation of the research project. Terms of application:
The European Fellowships (EF) support experienced researchers (usually postdocs) in further developing their career by financing a research project at a host institution in an EU Member State or Associated Country. The research project should be aimed at the diversification of the researcher's competences in terms of skill acquisition at a multi- or interdisciplinary level. The topic of the project can be chosen freely by the researcher. Proposals are submitted to either one of eight scientific evaluation panels or one of three separate multidisciplinary evaluation panels.
