Workshop

[ONLINE-SEMINAR] Storytelling in Science: How Walther White, Tony Soprano or Carrie Mathison can help you present facts that also captivate your audience.

Monday, 29 March 2021, 11:00-12:30
online

The workshop will be held in English

As a scientist, you often need to communicate with audiences that neither share your expertise about a subject nor your enthusiasm for it, e.g. students, colleagues from different fields, grant bodies, the general public.

Whenever people are more or less indifferent to your topic, there is the risk that their attention will fade at some point, making it difficult for your message to get through.

To help scientists present information that also excites non-experts, this session will introduce some basic principles for generating captivating narratives from the realm of fictional storytelling. For, as Olson (2015) has shown, it is possible to have one's scientific communication be inspired by the tools of the entertainment industry without sacrificing one's commitment to truth and rigour.
