Climate Change: Communication and Creative Story-Telling
The impacts of climate change are experienced and seen everywhere, including Germany. The recent narratives on climate change urge all the parties – in other words, all of us – to “take more ambitious actions to close the global climate mitigation gap”. This urge by the UN Climate Change Conference organizers closely relates to motivating action, a challenging task that goes hand in hand with climate change communication. A series of recent studies has demonstrated the effective use of visuals in communicating climate change, while also motivating action. In this course we will watch, reflect on and discuss images, video clips, films, public events and art work related to climate change. These visuals are more concerned with story-telling, rather than presenting charts and technical data. We will critically examine the recent studies on climate change, as well as the scientific findings on visual communication. Finally, you will engage in (co)creating a visual draft-project related to your interests and climate change. Sufficient command of English is important in order to actively participate in all activities. This is an interdisciplinary and interactive Seminar.
