New Date: Publication Strategies in Science [ONLINE WORKSHOP]
Online Seminar
Online
Prof. Dr. Annette Kolb, Coachademics

The workshop will be held in English on April 29, 2024, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"Publish or perish" – nowadays this caveat is more valid than ever in science. The motivations  driving scientists to publish their work are diverse: ranging from the dissemination of research results to strengthening  one’s own reputation as a scientist. Thus, the role of bibliometric factors is becoming increasingly important for the measurement of scientific performance. At the same time, the possibilities of publication platforms are at least as diverse as the scientists, who want to use them. Thus, it is important for young scientists, early in their career, to learn to present their scientific results and to develop publication strategies.

This workshop is aimed at young scientists, who are currently developing or have already developed their own research results and want to publish them in view of a strategic career plan.

The participants will:

Gain insights into the publication process and different publication formats and platforms Discuss pro and contra of Open Access publications Come to know about quality assessment (peer review) and measurements of a scientific publication Learn about the structure of a scientific publication Receive information about quality criteria for a „good“ publication (the reviewers point of view) Be informed about good scientific publication practice Learn about a reasonable publication strategy Develop and outline for an individual publication strategy based on their short-time and mid-term career plans.
The workshop will include a mixture of tools, from short presentations to group work and individual exercises to plenum discussions.

This workshop is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members.

The workshop will be held in English on April 29, 2024, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Technical requirements: To participate in this workshop, you need a stable internet connection, a webcam and a microphone. Participants will receive further detailed information regarding the online-platform prior to the workshop.

Parallel to the professional competences (research phase), the planning of research projects (pre-research phase) and the handling and publication (post-research phase) of research results (including research data) are among the integral key competencies of researchers. In all phases, the competent use of research data management (RDM) proves essential for disseminating research results and is an important step for a career in science and research. Effective data management can help optimise research outputs, increase the impact of your research and support open scientific research.

This training event will provide you with basic RDM skills and help you make informed decisions about how to go about managing your research data, regardless of your discipline or academic field. You will receive in-depth training on best practices for documenting, organising, sharing and archiving your research data according to the FAIR data principles, including personal data and working in international collaborations.

The training addresses the practical application of RDM, allowing you to practice data documentation and learn how to create or improve data management plans for your research projects. In addition, you will be introduced to the interdisciplinary RDM services at KIT. Tools along the research data life cycle, such as Research Data Management Organiser (RDMO), Registry of Research Data Repositories (re3data) and the generic research data repository RADAR4KIT, including some short RDM exercises, will round off the training. After completing this workshop, you will be better equipped to manage your data throughout the research data lifecycle, from project planning to completion.

Learning objectives
Upon completion of this workshop, you will be able to:
Identify legal and data protection issues to be considered in your research and data management plans, Apply best practices for documenting, organising, sharing and archiving your research data, Explain the FAIR principles and the importance of metadata for research, Create data management plans for your research, Use tools and services at KIT for your own research data management purposes, And find available information and support for RDM.
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members.

Know Your Bias. Become Aware of How Unconscious Beliefs Affect Your Career [ONLINE WORKSHOP]
Online Seminar
Online
Ines Köhler, Personalentwicklung und Berufliche Ausbildung (PEBA)

The event will be held in English on May 14, 2024.

It is increasingly acknowledged that humans often perceive their environment on the basis of stereotypes of which they are often not aware. Although such biases allow you to react fast to new information, they can also negatively affect your judgement of and cooperation with other people – as well as other people’s evaluation of and collaboration with you. In order to mitigate our own biases towards others and other persons’ unconscious biases towards you, we need to have a critical look at the way biases function and what we can do to counteract their effects. Since biases don´t stop at the doorstep to science and scientific work, every scientist should be aware of how they can be directly affected by the phenomena, e.g. on different occasion throughout their career.

In this workshop, we will examine what unconscious biases are and how their undesired effects can be interrupted. Important topics will thus be:
the reasons for and effects of unconscious bias types of biases in general and especially in a professional context their impact on our (working) life and interactions based on scientific studies alternate modes of action to prevent undesired effects
After attending the workshop, you will be able to
perceive, identify and question your own biases discuss different options for how to act integrate recommendations into your daily work
Methodically, this workshop will employ self-reflection, small-group work and group discussions.

This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members.

Ethics in the Lab. A Workshop for Early Career Researchers on Scientific Misconduct and How to Avoid it [ONLINE WORKSHOP]
Online Seminar
Online
PD Dr. phil. Alexander Bagattini and Team, ARRTI (KIT Academy for Responsible Research, Teaching, and Innovation)

What is the relation between good and successful research, on the one hand, and ethical and responsible research, on the other hand?

This workshop focuses on typical conflicts that particularly early career researchers may face in the context of a publish-or-perish culture: Is it okay for me to ignore and leave out statistical “outliers” when presenting my research data in case they impact the overall results more than I would like? Is such data “massaging” already scientific misconduct? How transparent must research practice be, when at the same time one has to succeed in the competitive world of scientific research? How to respond when you notice academic misconduct by a colleague? How should you handle problematic expectations of your supervisor?

In this workshop, however, we not only want to explain that these areas of conflict exist, but above all provide tools that can help you make your own decisions. We will do this by discussing realistic cases and using these cases to illustrate how easy it is to overlook important things and thus unintentionally overstep boundaries. In this way, participants can acquire the skills they need to recognise and avoid scientific misconduct. The workshop provides general skills and knowledge of research ethics needed for scientists to address the questions raised above. Participants attain the skills to rationally reflect on their role as a scientist from an ethical standpoint, including the specific expectations that role involves in a broader social context.

The workshop will show that successful research goes hand in hand with ethical and responsible research.

Please plan additional time for pre-workshop activities.

This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members.
